Stock perpetual futures on centralized crypto exchanges achieved a record $665.42 billion in August, representing a 4.6% increase from July's $636.19 billion, according to WuBlockchain Data Center. This figure represents a dramatic 56.5 times increase from January's $11.58 billion, demonstrating the rapid expansion of this market segment. The growth reflects the increasing institutional and retail interest in tokenized equity derivatives as a trading vehicle, with exchanges finding real demand for wrapping traditional equity exposure inside crypto-native trading rails. As per AMBCrypto, these contracts now represent 23.48% of all Perpetual Futures activity, a dramatic shift from just 0.5% in November 2025, confirming Wall Street's move onto crypto rails after initial objection and criticism.
Three underlying assets controlled more than half of the August volume, with SanDisk (SNDK) leading at $193.58 billion, followed by SK Hynix (SKHYNIX) at $75.89 billion and SpaceX-tracking SPCX contract at $65.93 billion. Together, these three chip and space-related stocks represented 50.4% of the total market volume. Notably, SNDK's perpetual volume reached 62.4% of its US spot turnover on August 19, marking the highest ratio on record in WuBlockchain's tokenized equities data, though this ratio moderated to 38.0% by August 26. No other equity-linked perpetual contract approached this level of concentration, with Circle (CRCL) ranking second at 47.2% and Nvidia (NVDA) and Meta both sitting below 3%. The concentration in memory and semiconductor stocks continues to drive the majority of trading in tokenized stock derivatives, separating this market's behavior from broader equity investing trends.
Binance reported approximately $433.4 billion in traditional finance perpetual volume for August, representing about 15 times January's $29.5 billion. Equity-linked contracts generated $342.9 billion of that figure, or close to 79%. The exchange is now offering options on more than 1,000 US stocks and exchange-traded funds for eligible users outside the United States. Competitor Bybit plans to launch 24/7 options trading on September 17, using SpaceX and Nvidia perpetuals as underlyings, indicating the growing competitive landscape in this market segment. This expansion signals exchanges' bet that demand for equity-linked crypto products will keep growing beyond the current handful of chip names, with AMBCrypto noting that exchanges such as Binance, Bybit, and Hyperliquid could increasingly compete with traditional brokers and futures exchanges.
The surge in perpetual futures trading is primarily driven by crypto platforms attracting traditional-asset trading because perpetual futures offer 24/7 access, making stocks, ETFs, and commodities easier to trade through crypto infrastructure. As per AMBCrypto, this allows investors to speculate on assets like SpaceX without owning the actual stock, creating attractive opportunities for traders seeking volatility. The platform expansion includes Bybit and Hyperliquid as important venues for traditional-asset speculation, with the crypto community applauding this milestone as the August flipover where traditional finance finally gave in to crypto rails. This trend could fundamentally change how traditional markets operate, with individual stocks potentially experiencing larger price swings than Bitcoin, creating new opportunities for traders seeking volatility through perpetual contracts.
