
Starknet has officially launched its STRK20 privacy framework, enabling private transfers and balance masking for any ERC20 asset on its network through zero-knowledge technology. According to The Block, the framework allows developers to integrate privacy features into various applications such as transfers, exchanges, and payments without creating separate privacy systems. The system can scan support transfers, swaps, lending, staking, payments, and donations while maintaining privacy as a native mode of activity rather than a specialist detour. As Starknet Foundation growth vice president Damian Chen explained, this represents 'practical privacy in the truest sense' that preserves public confidentiality while retaining routes for required disclosure.
The STRK20 framework includes viewing keys that support selective disclosure of wallet activity in response to legally binding requests while keeping transactions hidden from public view. As reported by The Block, this mechanism allows only information responsive to legally binding requests to be disclosed, maintaining compliance-ready disclosure paths when required by law. The framework employs a unique 'masking' mode that enables developers to add private transaction flows without building a separate privacy stack, ensuring privacy while complying with legal requirements. Each participant registers an encrypted viewing key, with an independent auditing party able to reconstruct one user's activity after receiving a valid legal or regulatory request, while other accounts in the pool remain hidden. According to StarkWare co-founder and CEO Eli Ben-Sasson, STRK20 should not be viewed as a guarantee of regulatory approval or legal compliance, instead following a risk-based approach where privacy remains conditional with screening occurring before assets enter shielded pools.
The strkBTC launch provided STRK20 with its first major use case, bringing shielded balances and private transfers to bitcoin activity on Starknet. According to The Block, strkBTC uses STRK20 to make shielding part of the asset experience itself, allowing bitcoin to move between public and private modes through supported Starknet wallets and applications. The rollout supports shielding through Ready X and Xverse wallets, while Starknet is expanding private swaps through avnu and Ekubo, and lending through Vesu and staking through Endur. Some parts of these DeFi transactions may remain visible, as amounts routed through public liquidity can appear onchain even when the direct link to a user's wallet is hidden, with privacy strengthening as more users enter the shared pool.
