SBI Shinsei Bank has launched a three-month promotional program that links deposit interest payments to cryptocurrency exchange vouchers worth 20% of the interest earned. According to reports from Nikkei, the Japanese bank will offer crypto exchange vouchers that can be redeemed for Bitcoin, Ether, or XRP. The program covers both ordinary deposits and time deposits with maturities ranging from three months to five years, with customers receiving their regular interest in yen along with the vouchers. The rollout represents a significant shift in traditional banking services, turning conventional savings products into crypto on-ramps that potentially expose mainstream bank customers to digital assets without requiring direct purchases.
The pilot program officially kicks off June 10, 2026 and is expected to transition into a permanent service by fall 2026. As reported by Nikkei, the initiative targets roughly 4.33 million deposit accounts that are potentially in scope for the program. Customers will continue receiving their standard yen-denominated interest as usual, with the additional 20% of interest payments distributed as exchange vouchers. The program represents one of the very few traditional banks anywhere in the world to embed crypto rewards directly into a deposit product, demonstrating Japan's leadership in integrating digital assets into mainstream financial services. The deposits remain in yen and retain their deposit insurance, with only the interest portion gaining crypto exposure through the linked SBI VC Trade account.
The program's inclusion of XRP as a redeemable option reinforces SBI Group's long-standing relationship with Ripple's ecosystem. Over the years, SBI has consistently backed Ripple's XRP ecosystem, cementing its reputation as one of the asset's strongest institutional supporters in Asia. The move adds another chapter to SBI's well-established relationship with XRP, demonstrating how traditional financial institutions are finding practical ways to integrate blockchain assets into everyday services. For XRP supporters, this initiative serves as further proof of the token's deepening role in regulated financial products, moving crypto adoption well beyond exchanges and trading platforms.
The significance of SBI's XRP conversion program becomes clear when viewed against Japan's massive banking system. As reported by AMBCrypto, Japan's banking system holds roughly $8.6 trillion in deposits, with total interest payments across the system running into tens of billions annually. Even with low interest rates often below 0.5% for many accounts, this creates substantial potential for crypto adoption. SBI's move will give a small slice of that interest flow a direct path into XRP, potentially creating a potential source of recurring demand for the token. However, the crypto market faces challenges, with the total crypto market cap at $2.15 trillion at press time, still below its previous peak and lagging behind equities like the S&P 500 which has moved above 7,400.
According to reports, SBI Securities plans to offer funds created by SBI Global Asset Management, including investment trusts and exchange-traded funds focused on cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ether. These investment products tied to digital assets are currently under development as part of SBI Group's comprehensive cryptocurrency ecosystem expansion strategy. The moves represent a comprehensive approach to digital asset adoption, covering everything from traditional banking services to regulated securities products, providing customers with multiple pathways to participate in the crypto market through established financial channels. If the pilot program performs well, it could inspire other banks to explore similar offerings, making SBI's crypto reward program an early blueprint for how traditional banking and digital assets can genuinely work side by side.
