A7A5, a Russian ruble-pegged stablecoin designed to bypass Western financial channels, is at the center of a growing dispute over how widely it is actually used. According to reports from CoinDesk, the token's issuer claims more than $200 million in average daily volume driven largely by decentralized finance activity, with $34.4 billion processed between January 1 and June 17 this year. However, blockchain analytics firms are disputing these figures, with TRM Labs analyst Chris Keegan placing A7A5's average daily volume closer to $75 million and claiming 34% of observed transaction volume consists of circular fund movements that artificially inflate activity. The latest data shows A7A5 trading at $0.005931, reflecting the token's current market position amid ongoing disputes about its authentic usage.
As reported by CoinDesk, analysts from blockchain firms TRM Labs and Elliptic are raising concerns about the token's authentic usage. Tom Robinson, co-founder of Elliptic, stated that monthly transaction volumes have fallen by more than 90% since January and are down 96% from their peak last year, following sanctions imposed by the U.S., European Union and United Kingdom, as well as the collapse of Russia-linked exchange Grinex. According to Robinson, the token has lost momentum in its goal of enabling Russian sanctions evasion. The current market price of $0.005931 reflects these ongoing concerns about the token's legitimacy and practical usage within the sanctioned environment.
According to CoinDesk reports, A7A5's director for regulatory affairs Oleg Ogienko defended the token's usage claims, stating that most of the token's activity takes place in decentralized finance platforms where users typically don't need to identify themselves and trades occur directly between crypto wallets rather than through centralized exchanges. Ogienko criticized major crypto data sites including CoinMarketCap, CoinGecko and DeFiLlama for relying too heavily on centralized exchange data, claiming this creates a discriminatory approach contrary to UN principles. He argued that traditional data providers undercount DeFi-based activity. The current market dynamics continue to favor DeFi platforms over centralized exchanges, with A7A5's $0.005931 trading price reflecting this preference among users seeking privacy and sanctions-resistant transactions.
As reported by CoinDesk, Kaitlin Martin, a sanctions and national security specialist, noted that A7A5 remains largely confined to a Russia-linked ecosystem because Western sanctions have prevented most global trading venues from listing the token. However, users can still swap A7A5 into other cryptocurrencies through Russia-linked services, allowing funds to enter the broader crypto ecosystem for cross-border payments, including commodities trade. The dispute highlights the difficulty of measuring crypto activities that fall outside of centralized exchanges, particularly when the token is designed to help users avoid global sanctions and trade on DeFi exchanges. With A7A5 trading at $0.005931, the token continues to operate within this sanctioned environment, though its global reach remains significantly limited by international restrictions.
