Polkadot [DOT] experienced a significant decline, falling approximately 7.82% over 24 hours to $1.13 on October 7, trading between $1.10 and $1.25. According to latest reports, the cryptocurrency was trading at $1.21 on October 6 before experiencing a rapid decline. The price dropped from about $1.19 to near $1.12 in a matter of minutes, with only a brief recovery to $1.14 a few hours later before continuing its downward trajectory. The token is now approaching critical support levels at $1.07 and $1.01, with $1.07 being the key support zone that could determine future price direction. As per TradingView data, DOT traded near $1.032 on October 8, after reaching a session high of $1.130 and a low of $1.009, bringing it close to the halfway retracement of its recovery from $0.726 to $1.309.
Technical indicators suggest continued bearish pressure as DOT remains below its pivot point of $1.16 and short-term moving averages. The Bollinger Band and moving averages are signaling cautious trading ahead as the token tests these support zones. The cryptocurrency's market capitalization currently stands at approximately $2.03 billion, ranking it 53rd among cryptocurrencies by market cap. This represents a significant decline from its 2021 peak of $52 billion, with the current market cap 96% below its 2021 peak and still approximately 240,000 times its yearly revenue. Despite the price decline, the network continues to process approximately 1,400 transactions daily, generating roughly $23 in fees each day or about $8,400 annually, according to Chainspect data. According to TradingView analysis, the daily Fibonacci support sits at $1.017, followed by $0.949 if selling continues, with the $0.949 level representing the 38.2% retracement of the recovery. The 4-hour chart shows a rounded top above a horizontal floor near $0.936, with the 4-hour Average Directional Index standing at 31.23 and rising during the latest decline.
Polkadot announced that dotUSD had reached mainnet under its OpenGov governance system, with Referendum 1944's executed proposal establishing a protocol-owned asset and treasury-funded DOT/dotUSD liquidity. The proposal allocates $2.5 million in USDT to mint dotUSD and $2.5 million worth of DOT to seed the pool, allowing users to hold dotUSD without keeping DOT in the same account. According to the referendum, the first phase permits one-for-one minting against USDT, subject to a cap, without price oracles, borrowing vaults, or liquidation machinery. A later phase would introduce DOT collateral, oracles, a stability pool and liquidation mechanisms, drawing from Liquidity v2 with borrowers selecting their interest rates. The Polkadot Community Foundation states it will not issue, operate, or custody the stablecoin or user collateral. For U.S. dollar exposure, dotUSD is described as dollar-pegged, with DOT-backed issuance belonging to the planned second phase.
The decline in Polkadot was part of a broader cryptocurrency market sell-off triggered by Bitcoin's sharp fall below $84,000, dropping over $2,000 in minutes. This caused significant losses among major altcoins including MNT, DOT, and UNI. The total crypto market capitalization declined by more than $60 billion within 24 hours, with the broader market weakness contributing to the continued pressure on DOT. This market-wide decline suggests that altcoins are experiencing heightened selling pressure as investors reassess risk exposure across the cryptocurrency sector.
The futures market data reveals significant liquidation of leveraged positions during the decline. As reported by AMBCrypto, open interest decreased from $91 million to approximately $85 million during the crash, indicating that leveraged traders were forced to close their positions quickly. However, open interest has since recovered to around $87.4 million, suggesting some traders returned to the market after the initial sell-off. According to CoinDesk, long liquidations across major exchanges Binance, Bybit, and OKX totaled $640,000 during the rapid decline, while no short liquidations were reported, indicating one-sided selling pressure. Daily momentum readings also favor sellers, with Aroon Down at 100% and Aroon Up at 14.29%, consistent with a recent low occurring much more recently than a comparable high.
