Crypto exchange OKX has officially launched perpetual oil futures in partnership with Intercontinental Exchange, the parent company of the New York Stock Exchange. According to the joint statement released Friday, the new perpetual futures contracts will use ICE's benchmark pricing data for Brent crude and West Texas Intermediate (WTI). As reported by The Block, this launch represents a meaningful step forward as the industry modernizes money and markets, with the contracts offering retail traders access to some of the world's most widely referenced oil benchmarks.
The partnership will provide access to energy benchmark products for OKX's more than 120 million retail traders worldwide, as stated by Trabue Bland, senior vice president of futures exchanges at ICE. The contracts will be offered in regions where OKX is already licensed to provide perpetual futures trading services. Haider Rafique, global managing partner at OKX, emphasized that oil remains one of the most important commodities in the global economy, noting that combining ICE's established market benchmarks with regulated perpetual futures products creates a bridge between traditional financial markets and digital asset trading platforms.
The launch comes as crude oil markets experience significant volatility, with WTI crude trading at $94.69 following a dramatic overnight decline of nearly $5 to $89.70 during Globex trading. According to latest market reports, the diplomatic risk premium that had built over three sessions materialized overnight as Iran signaled openness to negotiating Hormuz passage terms, triggering a rapid unwind of geopolitical premium. The market had priced in months of closure, and any credible reopening signal collapses the premium fast. Every level in the Thursday setup has been breached, with support levels at $93.51, $92.80, and $90.82 now acting as overhead resistance.
The current market volatility stems from ongoing geopolitical tensions, particularly regarding the Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly 21% of global oil supply transits daily. As reported by multiple market sources, the Strait has been officially rated a WAR ZONE (70/100) with active Iranian naval activity and ongoing blockade risk. Flow is already down -1.4 mb/d (7% of baseline) as the world's most critical energy chokepoint faces active military threat. The Iran war has reportedly "shattered oil's price compass," with energy analysts suggesting the conflict could push the U.S. to become a net crude exporter for the first time since World War II.
The launch comes as perpetual oil futures gain significant traction among crypto traders, with Hyperliquid, a decentralized trading platform, generating nearly $1.6 billion in daily trading volume and more than $1.3 billion in open interest. Perpetual futures, commonly called 'perps', allow traders to speculate on asset prices without expiration dates, unlike traditional futures contracts where traders need to roll over positions or take physical delivery of commodities. The partnership represents a traditional exchange's response to the growing popularity of these derivative products in the digital asset space, with OKX and ICE following a broader strategic relationship established earlier this year.
