The partnership between Kraken and MoneyGram has officially launched, enabling Kraken customers to cash out crypto at MoneyGram locations in more than 100 countries. As reported by Fortune, this service addresses a critical pain point for crypto users who need to convert digital assets to fiat currency. The partnership particularly benefits Kraken's growing user base in countries with more volatile currencies, where users treat the exchange like a traditional bank and require USD-denominated services. MoneyGram's 500,000+ retail locations worldwide provide the physical infrastructure necessary to bridge the gap between digital assets and traditional cash transactions.
According to reports from CoinDesk, Kraken co-CEO Arjun Sethi announced that the cryptocurrency exchange is '80% ready' to proceed with its initial public offering. Speaking at Consensus Miami alongside Anthony Soohoo, chairman and CEO of MoneyGram, Sethi confirmed that while the company has filed confidentially with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in November, they are currently waiting for optimal market conditions before moving forward with the listing. The exchange has been steadily building its product portfolio, including the recent acquisition of U.S. futures exchange NinjaTrader and derivatives platform Bitnomial over the past year.
According to the Consensus Miami discussion, both companies view stablecoins as a key solution for expanding financial access and reducing costs across the system. Soohoo emphasized that stablecoins can 'remove waste' and lower costs throughout the financial ecosystem, while Sethi noted that 'intermediaries are the losers here, but they should be' in this evolving landscape. The partnership reflects a broader transformation where users increasingly treat exchanges like traditional banks, with crypto firms taking over many banking functions previously handled by traditional institutions. MoneyGram has incorporated stablecoins throughout its operations and built out a noncustodial crypto wallet as part of its digital transformation over the past three years.
As reported by CoinDesk, MoneyGram, which was taken private in 2023, is prioritizing company rebuilding over immediate public market pressures. Soohoo stated the company is 'focused on rebuilding the company' rather than rushing to market. Meanwhile, Sethi cited broader industry changes driven by automation and tighter cost discipline as factors influencing the timing of Kraken's IPO decision. The shared goal of both companies remains cheaper, faster financial access for users traditionally excluded from the financial system, with MoneyGram viewing this partnership as 'just another step in the process of digitizing' its business model.
