Indonesia's Financial Services Authority (OJK) has officially declared the country's on-chain economy is coming, as outlined by Adi Budiarso, OJK's Chief Executive for Financial Sector Technology Innovation, Digital Financial Assets and Crypto Assets Supervision. According to reports from AMBCrypto, Adi made this declaration during a keynote address at Coinfest Asia 2026 held in Bali on August 20-21. The regulator is moving to expand the role of digital assets beyond crypto trading and deeper into the national financial system, recognizing that crypto assets have evolved from speculative instruments to engines driving decentralized finance transactions.
Indonesia's domestic crypto market continues to expand significantly, with OJK recording 22.69 million crypto asset consumers as of June 2026, up from 22.40 million a month earlier, as reported by AMBCrypto. The transaction value reached IDR 28.58 trillion, representing a 24.2% increase from May. The market infrastructure has developed to include 26 licensed digital financial asset traders, two exchanges, two clearing institutions and two custodians operating in the ecosystem. This growth aligns with OJK's broader vision to establish Indonesia as Asia's crypto hub for innovation, investment and crypto transactions.
Following revisions to Indonesia's Financial Sector Development and Strengthening Law (P2SK Law), OJK is advancing four strategic priorities for the country's digital asset sector. According to AMBCrypto, the first priority involves recognizing crypto asset service providers as part of the financial services industry, bringing governance standards closer to conventional financial institutions. The second priority includes implementing a Single Investor Identification (SID) system for crypto investors, similar to the capital markets mechanism, to enhance credibility and transparency. Stablecoins will be treated as transactional instruments but not payment tools, with global stablecoin supply rising from around US$200 billion in early 2025 to between $317-320 billion in early 2026.
OJK is finalizing regulations for real-world asset (RWA) tokenization, which allows real-world assets to be represented digitally using blockchain technology. As reported by AMBCrypto, the global RWA market expanded by 256.7% between Q1 2025 and Q1 2026, with its value moving toward approximately US$33.5 billion by mid-2026. In Indonesia, models include tokenization of gold, government securities (SBN) and property economic rights. Adi noted that RWA tokenization could help expand access to capital for small and medium-sized enterprises while broadening access to financial opportunities, supporting Indonesia's broader economic agenda under the 2025-2029 National Medium-Term Development Plan targeting 8% economic growth by 2029.
