Grayscale launched its new Digital Assets Next Gen model portfolio on Monday, excluding Bitcoin entirely from the allocation. According to reports from BeInCrypto, the portfolio holds seven funds as of August 31, with ether leading at 42.34%, followed by XRP at 26.11%, and Solana taking 21.09%. These three cryptocurrencies collectively represent approximately 89% of the portfolio's total allocation. The model operates as a published recipe where Grayscale selects the assets and weights, and financial advisors can copy this mix into client accounts using the firm's exchange-traded funds. As reported by AMBCrypto, Grayscale has developed four different model portfolios with distinct purposes: the Digital Assets Core Plus includes Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, and Chainlink; Digital Assets Leaders focuses on the five largest eligible crypto assets; Digital Assets Infrastructure targets protocol-supporting assets; and Digital Assets Next Gen provides exposure to crypto assets beyond Bitcoin, including both established and emerging projects.
In the new portfolio structure, XRP holds the second-largest position at 26.11%, positioning it as a significant component of Grayscale's diversified crypto allocation strategy. As reported by BeInCrypto, the token is currently trading near $1.42, up approximately 5% on the day, ranking as the fifth-largest cryptocurrency by market value. According to AMBCrypto, XRP was trading at $1.40 at the time of reporting after a hike of almost 40% in the past month, significantly outperforming Bitcoin which was changing hands at $76,846.10 after a 22.1% increase. The token's inclusion reflects Grayscale's confidence in XRP's potential within their advisor-focused product offerings. However, the Grayscale XRP Trust ETF trades 38.51% below its launch price, as reported by BeInCrypto, with the same trust selling $180 million in tokens during the first half of the year at a realized loss.
The Next Gen model operates under specific constraints and management protocols. According to BeInCrypto reports, Grayscale caps any single asset at 40% and resets the weights every three months. As noted by AMBCrypto, the portfolios are subject to rebalancing every quarter, wherein Grayscale can change the allocations as market capitalization and the eligible asset universe change. The portfolio includes Hyperliquid at 5.76%, which launched its Grayscale fund in June, while Chainlink, Avalanche, and Sui split the remaining allocation. The model charges no separate fee for advisors, with underlying funds averaging 0.23% in fees. As noted by Grayscale's Global Head of Distribution Laurie Katz, advisors are increasingly looking for ways to bring digital assets into client portfolios without having to build and maintain allocations asset by asset.
The portfolio's composition reflects broader market dynamics where Bitcoin's dominance was testing resistance at 59.27%, meaning Bitcoin's share of the total crypto market was approaching a level where it has historically struggled to move higher. According to AMBCrypto, if dominance breaks above this level, Bitcoin could continue outperforming altcoins, while a rejection could signal capital rotating toward altcoins such as XRP, Solana, and Ethereum. However, the altcoin season index sits at 36 at press time, confirming that Bitcoin is currently ruling the market. The exclusion of Bitcoin from the Next Gen portfolio and Grayscale's decision to give more weightage to XRP than Bitcoin suggests the investment giant is positioning for potential altcoin outperformance, though current market indicators show Bitcoin maintaining its leadership position.
