
The Ethereum Foundation is recruiting a protocol security researcher to leverage artificial intelligence, fuzz testing, and manual audits for vulnerability detection across Ethereum's core infrastructure. According to the job posting, the researcher will join the Foundation's Protocol Security team and investigate weaknesses across multiple network components, including the execution layer that processes transactions and smart contracts, consensus layer coordinating validators, peer-to-peer network, technical specifications, and client programs. The remote position is open to candidates in Europe and other regions globally, requiring extensive knowledge of Ethereum protocols and relevant programming languages including Go, Rust, Java, C#, Nim, and Python.
The hiring follows the Foundation's recent testing of coordinated AI agents against protocol code, cryptographic software, and network systems. In a July 9 technical post, the Protocol Security team confirmed that AI agents had uncovered genuine flaws in the network. As reported by the Foundation, the agents found real bugs, with the surprise being how little work went into finding them compared to determining which findings were genuine. One confirmed finding was a remotely triggered panic in libp2p's gossipsub component, fixed before disclosure as CVE-2026-34219. However, most work involved separating AI-generated findings from false positives, requiring reproducible evidence, proof-of-concept code, and human review before treating reports as vulnerabilities.
The Foundation's security focus aligns with broader industry trends as blockchain leaders increasingly pivot toward AI security research. Sam Blackshear, creator of the Move smart contract language and former CTO of Mysten Labs, announced on August 6 that he is joining Anthropic to focus on defensive security research. According to Blackshear's announcement on X, the move allows him to "return to hands-on technical work while exploring new problem domains." Blackshear will remain a close adviser to Mysten Labs and respond to requests from the Sui ecosystem, with Mysten's leadership page listing him as cofounder and CTO alongside CEO Evan Cheng before the announcement.
The hiring follows the Foundation's appointment of security researcher Pascal Caversaccio to its board on July 29 for an initial one-year voluntary term, expanding the board to four members and reinforcing its focus on security, privacy, and censorship resistance. For U.S. investors, protocol security has direct relevance as Ethereum supports spot exchange-traded funds, stablecoins, tokenized assets, and financial applications used by American institutions. The new role formalizes the workflow by combining automated discovery with manual verification and disclosure management, expanding the team responsible for reviewing future hard forks and finding weaknesses before protocol changes reach the main network.
