Charles Hoskinson, founder of Cardano, has stepped back from public appearances due to relentless personal attacks and a toxic online atmosphere. According to TokenPost, Hoskinson warned of a "wave of failures" and stated he is "tired of managing a decline." This development has triggered a wave of fear across the cryptocurrency market as ADA plunged to its lowest price level in over five years. The sharp decline follows growing concerns about the ecosystem's future after Hoskinson's recent comments about taking a break, with investors questioning whether ADA is approaching a historic buying opportunity or facing deeper trouble. As per Santiment Intelligence, Cardano has quickly become one of the most talked-about assets in the cryptocurrency market after ADA plunged below $0.16 for the first time since December 2020. The market reaction was immediate, with both social and on-chain activity rising sharply as the asset hit multi-year lows.
The Cardano ecosystem faces unprecedented decline with total value locked (TVL) collapsing from $905 million in late 2024 to just $139.77 million - an 85% drop. According to TokenPost, weekly Cardano DEX volume has fallen from a peak near 19 million ADA in late 2025 to about 1.9 million, close to year's lowest levels. Daily active addresses have slipped from a late-2025 peak near 17,600 to about 14,900, while ADA trading volume has nose-dived. The Cardano Foundation cancelled the 2026 Cardano Summit due to governance failures, with Cardano's active full-time developers dropping 32% since the beginning of the year. Funds locked in decentralized apps are down 35% over the same period, while Cardano's smart money index has fallen to its lowest level of 2026 as informed money trades against the crowd. Santiment reported that Cardano's social dominance hit approximately 0.52%, a 2026 peak, though this represents a significant decline from previous levels. The timing of the decline couldn't be worse for a project watching its infrastructure partners fold and its founder log off.
Despite the sharp price decline, network activity experienced a notable increase during the period of heightened volatility. According to Santiment Intelligence, daily active addresses surged to 28,459, marking the highest reading in four months. The spike suggests that users remained highly engaged with the network as the price decline fueled intense debate and bearish sentiment among traders. Cardano's social dominance climbed to roughly 0.52%, its highest level of 2026, meaning that more than one out of every 190 cryptocurrency-related conversations on social media was focused on ADA. The analytics firm noted that despite the recent wave of negative sentiment surrounding Cardano, the network continues to benefit from one of the most dedicated communities in the cryptocurrency space. ADA holders have consistently remained active through multiple market cycles, often supporting the ecosystem even during periods when institutional participation was limited. However, Santiment cautioned that while retail investors have historically played a major role in Cardano's growth, the market may require stronger institutional interest and broader adoption catalysts to reverse the current downtrend.
Most of Cardano's biggest applications are experiencing significant declines. Minswap, the largest decentralized exchange, lost about 11% of its locked value over the month, while Indigo, a synthetic assets protocol, fell roughly 19%. Djed, Cardano's stablecoin, dropped about 21%, and SoSoValue, the multi-chain data platform, saw its Cardano footprint shrink about 19%. The only exception is Surf Lending, a lending protocol that grew its locked value by about 98% over the month and 14% in a week. However, Surf Lending holds only about $4.62 million, which is insufficient to reverse an ecosystem that has shed hundreds of millions. Leverage interest has drained significantly, with ADA futures open interest collapsing from about $1.6 billion in September 2025 to roughly $324 million. The departure of key infrastructure providers adds to the ecosystem's challenges, with TapTools, one of Cardano's most widely used analytics platforms, announcing on June 2-3 that it would wind down operations due to unsustainable costs and departures among its executive team.
