CoinMarketCap has issued a major warning to crypto users that the platform has not launched any official token or coin. According to reports from Crypto.news, the platform's message was clear: "CoinMarketCap does NOT have a Token/Coin." The warning specifically targets users who may encounter social media posts, messages, or advertisements claiming that CoinMarketCap has issued a token, with the platform categorizing any such promotions as 'Fake/Scam.' In a recent tweet, the CoinMarketCap X account issued a scam alert to the crypto community, stating 'Scam Alert: CoinMarketCap does NOT have a Token/Coin. If you see a promotion for CMC-Tokens, it is a Fake/Scam.'
Beyond token scams, CoinMarketCap has issued additional warnings about impersonation attempts. As reported by Crypto.news, the platform stated that CMC has no phone number and will never call users, advising users to contact official support when they have doubts. In a separate tweet, CoinMarketCap warns of bad actors seeking to impersonate its members, urging crypto holders to 'never be too trusting and to always verify sources.' The company has previously warned about impersonators, with its safety guide stating that employees will never ask users for personal information or direct payments. Users are encouraged to report fake staff, fake listing requests, and suspicious chats with proof such as transaction IDs or usernames.
According to Crypto.news reports, scammers often use known crypto brands to build quick trust with users. The platform previously reported that fake accounts had used the names and photos of former contributors to contact crypto projects. Some schemes employ fake emails, fake domains, branded Calendly links, and video calls to appear legitimate. In recent times, there has been an increase across the crypto market in scams involving fake exchange tokens, impersonation websites and social media promotions promising early access or special investment opportunities. These often target unsuspecting users as well as inexperienced traders and investors, with scammers creating unofficial tokens leveraging popular tokens or names in an attempt to trick investors.
The warning comes amid a significant phishing crisis in the cryptocurrency sector. As reported by Crypto.news, users lost more than $46.8 million in February 2024 across over 57,000 phishing incidents, with fake accounts on X sending victims to malicious sites. Recent security data shows the scale of the problem, with a Crypto.news report citing Binance security data showing 22.9 million phishing attempts blocked in the first quarter of 2026. The CoinMarketCap warning adds another reminder for users to verify links, avoid unknown token offers, and ignore anyone claiming the platform has launched a coin. CoinMarketCap reiterates that any token claiming to be from CoinMarketCap or using 'CMC' branding should be treated as fraudulent.
