Coinbase has extended its partnership with Standard Chartered to unlock multi-currency funding rails for institutional clients, as reported by The Block. The collaboration was officially announced on May 27 and aims to enhance capital efficiency and reduce foreign exchange friction as crypto markets have matured. According to Coinbase, institutions are now running complex strategies across spot, derivatives, and financing, requiring the ability to operate across global markets from a single platform. As institutional participation expands across regions, the ability to move capital efficiently across currencies has become a critical requirement. The update is designed to support firms operating across several crypto markets and trading products, with institutions increasingly expecting trading platforms to provide global access without delays linked to banking hours or regional restrictions.
The integration introduces new currency rails across AUD, SGD, CAD, and CHF, as well as GSIB-backed settlement for EUR and GBP, with institutional access available across Coinbase Prime and Coinbase Exchange. This will allow clients to manage global trading books without needing to consolidate positions into a single base currency, reduce foreign exchange conversion costs and allocate capital more quickly across regions. The services will be available through Coinbase Prime and Coinbase Exchange, though Prime Trading clients in the European Union will not have access to the feature at this stage. The new infrastructure will help institutional users manage global trading operations without relying on forced foreign exchange conversions, with clients able to operate using banking infrastructure supported by Global Systemically Important Banks.
Separately on Tuesday, Coinbase relaunched Direct Deposit for U.S. customers, allowing them to automatically allocate a portion of their paycheck into assets such as USDC and other cryptocurrencies, with zero trading fees, according to The Block. The company framed this move as part of its broader push to position Coinbase as an 'everything exchange' spanning trading, payments, savings, and onchain financial services. The relaunch comes as crypto firms continue expanding services tied to digital payments and stablecoins, with companies across the sector introducing products aimed at linking traditional financial systems with blockchain-based services.
According to Lookonchain, Coinbase noted that it will continue advancing capabilities for local fiat-to-stablecoin conversions and settlements moving forward. The company emphasized that the direction is clear: 'A system where capital is not constrained by geography, banking hours, or legacy infrastructure.' As it continues developing its stablecoin infrastructure, clients will be able to move funds between local fiat currencies and local stablecoins, enabling faster settlements and more efficient cross-border flows. Standard Chartered, an international bank with presence in the world's most dynamic markets, will provide the fiat payment infrastructure underpinning this project. The crypto exchange also stated that the update is part of a wider effort to improve efficiency for large-scale crypto trading operations, with the company's long-term strategy building an 'everything exchange' that combines payments, savings products, trading services, and onchain financial tools within one platform.
