Cloudflare officially launched Cloudflare Wallets on Tuesday, giving AI agents that run on its network a stablecoin balance and human-readable identity to pay for APIs, content and Model Context Protocol tools. According to the official announcement, users can now claim Cloudflare Wallet handles starting Tuesday, with agents able to optionally declare who runs them using examples like research.example.cloudflare.pay to tell merchants the organization behind requests. The company plans to offer two wallet types: Account Wallets controlled by individual or organizational customers, and Virtual Wallets operated through API keys that allow authorized agents to make controlled purchases within established permissions. Funding, Virtual Wallet issuance and onramping are scheduled for 'soon' without providing a specific launch date, with the initial phase now live allowing users to apply for wallet handles linked to their Cloudflare account.
The wallets form the buyer side of Cloudflare's planned agent commerce system, with its Monetization Gateway providing the seller side by allowing website owners to charge agents per request in stablecoins over x402. According to Agent Economy, x402 has settled 160.6 million transactions worth $41.2 million across seven chains and 18 tracked facilitators, averaging about 26 cents per transaction. The protocol processed 75.41 million transactions and $24.24 million in volume during the latest 30-day period, with 94,060 buyers and 22,000 sellers. Cloudflare's x402 documentation lists support for Base, Ethereum, Polygon, Optimism, Arbitrum, Avalanche, Solana, Aptos, Stellar and Sui, with USDC as the settlement asset and Coinbase's public facilitator used in all examples. The x402 protocol, developed and backed by Coinbase, is engineered to facilitate micropayments, enabling AI agents to make small, real-time payments to access digital resources without the need for traditional accounts, subscriptions, or API keys. This integration aims to streamline the payment process for AI-driven interactions, potentially unlocking new revenue streams for content creators and API providers.
Cloudflare Wallets and cloudflare.pay address the fundamental identity and payment challenges in agentic commerce by providing a comprehensive solution. Cloudflare accounts will receive unique web addresses that work as stable IDs, allowing users to extend identity to specific agents so businesses can see exactly who authorized requests. The Account Wallet serves as a central balance capable of receiving, holding and managing stablecoins, while users can assign Virtual Wallets to individual agents that can spend on online resources. These Virtual Wallets come with built-in guardrails from the start, including spending caps, approved merchant lists, and maximum transaction sizes that agents cannot exceed independently. Paired with the Monetization Gateway, Cloudflare Wallets and IDs complete the two-sided agentic payment market, ensuring both buyers and sellers have foundational building blocks for secure, confident transactions.
Cloudflare will initially offer conventional funding and withdrawal methods in supported locations, with eligible customers able to fund their wallets directly with stablecoins. The company has not identified the first countries or regions included in the rollout, nor disclosed which stablecoins or blockchains the wallets will support. According to the announcement, it has not named a custodian, banking partner, onramp provider or entity responsible for identity and compliance checks. The company commits only to 'simple ways to onramp and offramp funds within supported geographies, with self-funding via stablecoins available as an alternative for eligible users.' Pricing, transaction fees and withdrawal limits remain unknown, with these details determining how widely companies can deploy the product across different regulatory requirements across U.S. states and international markets. The full wallet features, including stablecoin top-ups and payments, are expected to roll out in subsequent phases as reported by The Block, with the current phase focusing on handle reservations while core functionality remains in development.
Cloudflare has been assembling this agent payment infrastructure since last year, announcing the x402 Foundation with Coinbase in September 2025 and adding x402 support to its Agents SDK and MCP servers. The Linux Foundation launched the standard operationally on July 14 with 40 members, with Cloudflare and Stripe among its 17 premier members alongside Visa, Mastercard, Google, Amazon Web Services and Circle. The stablecoin supply stands at $307.7 billion, with Tether's USDT at $183.2 billion and Circle's USDC at $72.2 billion according to DefiLlama. This launch signals a growing trend toward automated payment systems in the digital economy, potentially simplifying how developers and businesses monetize APIs and digital content while reducing friction for AI agents that need to access multiple services. Other agent payment systems arrived on similar schedules, with Amazon Web Services and Coinbase wiring x402 into CloudFront and WAF in June, and MoonPay open-sourcing the Open Wallet Standard in March with PayPal and the Ethereum Foundation.
