Cardano governance is experiencing a significant crisis as an 81% active stake majority opposes a 32.9 million ADA proposal to fund Input Output Global's research lab for another year through Cardano's treasury. According to reports from Crypto.news, the opposition is primarily led by Japanese delegated representatives who argue the proposal lacks tight, auditable milestones. The voting period runs through June 8, with several dReps demanding competitive open RFP bids rather than an automatic IOG budget renewal. The proposal requests ₹7.9 crore worth of ADA to fund IOG's research program through June 2027, covering Ouroboros Leios, post-quantum cryptography, and zero-knowledge proofs with researchers at Edinburgh, Tokyo, Oxford, and Buenos Aires.
Founder Charles Hoskinson has called the vote existential for Cardano's identity as a science-based blockchain, warning that scientists could leave if the proposal fails. As reported by Crypto.news, Hoskinson stated during his response to the vote: "This doesn't have anything to do with me. This has to do with destroying the entire core of our ecosystem. Cardano is the science coin. That's our brand." The IOG research lab is responsible for Cardano's peer-reviewed development approach, including the Ouroboros consensus protocol, making its continued funding critical for the protocol's academic development engine. Hoskinson has specifically directed his appeal at Japanese dReps, where Cardano ran an early ICO, urging them to redelegate before June 8.
ADA was trading near $0.2512 on May 22, grinding along trendline support as Hoskinson publicly appeals to Japanese dReps to reverse the governance vote. The cryptocurrency has been pressing the rising trendline from the February low at $0.2200 for three consecutive sessions without breaking it. Technical analysis shows the 20 EMA at $0.2568 and 50 EMA at $0.2583 sit just above price, converging into the first resistance band. The 0.382 Fib at $0.2754 and 100 EMA at $0.2789 form the double resistance that capped the May rally, with four FVG zones stacked from $0.3000 to $0.3800 above that. A daily close above $0.2568 is the minimum requirement before any of these resistance zones become relevant, while below the trendline, there is nothing between $0.2489 and the February low at $0.2200.
Recent trading data shows volume rose 23.27% to $574.84M while open interest climbed 2.02% to $543.74M, indicating fresh positioning rather than existing trades closing. Retail on Binance holds a 2.1969 long ratio, OKX at 2.73, with top traders on Binance at 2.6765 by accounts and 1.6555 by positions. Over 24 hours, $456.41K in longs were liquidated against $73.42K in shorts, with longs absorbing six times more pain. The opposition is not anti-research, as critics want auditable milestones rather than a bundled annual budget, and open RFPs rather than automatic IOG renewal. If the vote fails and no revised proposal follows, IOG faces private funding, restructuring, or shrinking the research program.
