The protocol, developed by Coinbase in May 2025, enables AI agents to pay for services directly using stablecoins over HTTP. In April 2026, the team introduced Agentic.Market—a marketplace where people and autonomous assistants can find, compare, and connect protocol-compatible services without API keys. The protocol's settlement layer produces data that functions as a verifiable audit log, making each micropayment recordable at the settlement layer and traceable in principle, though analysts can see only the assistant's wallet and operational profile without identifying who controls the address.
The cryptocurrency ecosystem is gaining a critical infrastructure component with the introduction of ERC-8126, a standardized framework for verifying AI agents' trustworthiness. Developed by DonJohnson, co-author of the standard, and jointly written by Cybercentry and Virtuals Protocol, ERC-8126 builds upon the agent registration mechanism of ERC-8004 to introduce a standardized verification framework. The solution addresses a fundamental gap where AI agents can manage wallets, send transactions, and deploy code, but users have no standardized way to verify whether an agent is secure. ERC-8126 defines five layers of verification (tokens, media content, code, web endpoints, wallets) using zero-knowledge proofs to protect privacy, with each applicable verification type returning a score from 0 to 100, and the overall risk score being the average of these values. The standard enables a market of specialized verification service providers while maintaining interoperability across applications, marketplaces, and AI agent ecosystems.
Visa launched the Intelligent Commerce platform in 2025, following five years of investment in technology and security—more than $13 billion. By December, the company reported hundreds of transactions completed by autonomous systems in production without human involvement at the payment stage. The Trusted Agent Protocol was developed with Cloudflare, Microsoft, Shopify, Stripe, Adyen, Coinbase, and Worldpay. Mastercard introduced Agent Pay in April 2025 and conducted the first such transaction using digital tokenization. Catena, which is building agentic treasury and banking infrastructure, is cited as a production user of the system. Its implementation requires approval across the customer, the customer's agent, and the Catena treasury agent for transactions, with policy enforcement handled at the enclave level rather than the application layer. AI agents can create meaningful on-chain activity through blockchain composability and flexibility across different strategies, as reported by BeInCrypto.
