AI agents have dramatically increased their cryptocurrency spending, with more than 138 million transactions recorded through Coinbase's x402 protocol on the Base blockchain, according to Chainalysis' Inside North America's $3 trillion crypto economy: Agentic commerce accelerates report. The United States dominates this emerging market, with U.S.-linked wallets accounting for 88.1% of identified payments for AI model inference, while Chinese-linked wallets captured just 0.1% of the market. As reported by Chainalysis, this represents a significant shift as AI agents increasingly deploy crypto rails for compute, data, and security services, with more than 87% of analyzed x402 payments worth between one-hundredth of a cent and 10 cents. Major payment networks including Visa, Mastercard, and Stripe have backed the x402 protocol, while Coinbase has begun allowing business customers to accept payments from AI agents.
The XRP Ledger is experiencing significant growth in AI agent payment activity, with about 14 million transactions processed, representing approximately 25% of network activity. As reported by BeInCrypto, this represents a substantial increase from 1 million transactions in July, though most payments still involve small amounts. The research, published in collaboration with AWS, Cloudflare, Chainalysis, and Zoomex, finds that while protocols like Coinbase's x402 and Stripe/Tempo's Machine Payments Protocol process millions of transactions, real-world commercial demand remains practically non-existent. High transaction volumes are masking fractional-cent automated pings for API access, compute time, and simple data checks rather than indicating explosive growth in autonomous shopping or B2B commerce. Chainalysis data shows that in July, x402 processed roughly 75 million payments worth just $24 million over 30 days, with the amounts remaining small despite growing transaction counts.
The report's readiness framework reveals a stark divide between different use cases. Micropayments scored 60.7 out of 100, while Institutional Financial Workflows received a bottom-tier 12.0 out of 100. Out of 19 reviewed trading tools and financial systems, 14 operate strictly within pre-approved spending limits set by humans, while major exchanges like Zoomex still require real people to confirm every trade order. On trading platforms like Hyperliquid, AI-labeled tools accounted for less than 0.55% of overall trading volume. Yat Siu, co-founder and chairman of Animoca Brands, estimates that up to 100 billion AI agents will be transacting on the internet over the next few years, with crypto's next billion users potentially being AI agents paying with stablecoins. However, Francesco Gi noted that the industry has built payment rails far ahead of actual market demand, with most activity being small, repetitive, and concentrated among a handful of users.
The report highlights significant security concerns beyond simple spending limits. $281,200 was lost in exploits where validly budgeted capital was redirected to attacker-controlled wallets. Albert Castellana, CEO of GenLayer Labs, emphasized that while sending a few cents across a blockchain is easy, trusting software to make complex economic decisions is fundamentally different. He warned that agents can execute transactions exactly as instructed but still make terrible decisions due to wrong information, manipulation, or non-delivery of agreed services. The biggest risk identified is the 'execution gap' - delays or outbids on the way to blockchain confirmation that can lead to repeated, individually approved transactions causing real damage. Chainalysis data shows that among wallets first funded in Q2 2026, 89.3% received additional funding within 30 days, compared with 70.6% for wallets first funded in Q3 2025, indicating growing dependency on these payment systems.
Despite the growing transaction volumes, the price impact remains uncertain. XRP traded near $1.37 on October 13, within a range of $1.31 to $1.38, gaining roughly 0.31% over the last day. The token maintains a market cap near $86.7 billion. The partnership could position the XRP Ledger as a core settlement layer for machine-to-machine commerce, making automated payments easier for businesses to manage. However, Francesco Gi concluded that while today a penny-worth credit transaction costs $0.30, making traditional finance infrastructure economically unviable for micro-payments, agents with verifiable track records will eventually attract investor backing. Chainalysis' findings suggest autonomous software is beginning to establish its own spending habits, with the United States leading the market for paid AI services, though the amounts remain small and questions persist about genuine commercial demand versus artificial activity.
