
Stellantis has confirmed that Jeep will develop a new global SUV using Tata Motors' ARGOS platform, with production planned at the Ranjangaon facility and exports to nearly 50 countries by 2028.
Stellantis evaluated multiple options, including its own STLA-M platform, before choosing Tata's architecture. The decision came down to cold economics: developing a new platform from scratch would cost $1-2 billion and take 5-7 years, while leveraging Tata's existing platform slashes development time to 2-3 years.
For Jeep, the financial math is compelling. Building an all-new proprietary platform typically runs into billions of dollars. By adopting Tata's ARGOS architecture, Jeep avoids this capital expenditure entirely, paying only licensing fees that are likely a fraction of development costs. Harmonizing these disparate systems while maintaining functionality requires substantial engineering effort. Software development processes also need alignment—Tata's India-centric, cost-optimized, agile methodologies must mesh with Jeep's global, quality-focused, traditional approaches. The intellectual property sharing arrangement creates long-term strategic implications. But future powertrain technologies present potential limitations. Solid-state batteries, expected to reach mass market between 2028-2032, may require different platform architecture. Hydrogen fuel cells, which the transport fuel cell market projects will grow from $6.2 billion in 2025 to $14.7 billion by 2035, are not supported by ARGOS. Advanced autonomous driving (L4+) capabilities may also be limited by the current architecture.

The automotive industry faces increasingly complex requirements around cybersecurity (UNECE WP.29 R155 and R156), data privacy, safety standards, and environmental regulations beyond Euro 7. While Tata bears the cost of regulatory compliance for the base platform, Jeep remains responsible for vehicle-specific requirements.
