Vedanta's BALCO has emerged as the highest bidder for the Karlapat bauxite block in Odisha, offering a 175% revenue-sharing premium to secure one of India's largest untapped mineral deposits. According to reports from Mint, this represents the highest premium ever offered for a bauxite block auction in India. The block, located in Odisha's Kalahandi district, spans more than 3,100 hectares and is estimated to hold over 200 million tonnes of bauxite. The auction outcome reflects intense competition among India's biggest industrial groups for long-term access to critical raw materials.
On August 7, 2026, Vedanta Aluminium Metal Ltd announced that its subsidiary Bharat Aluminium Company Limited (BALCO) has been declared the preferred bidder for the Karlapat Bauxite Block through an auction process conducted by the Directorate of Mines and Geology, Government of Odisha.
