Thomas Cook (India) and its group company SOTC Travel announced the launch of trip cancellation due to visa rejection cover on Monday, in collaboration with ICICI Lombard. According to reports from The Hindu BusinessLine, PTI, Storyboard18, TravTalk, and NewsBytes, this new insurance product addresses a critical gap in travel protection for Indian travelers. The companies described the product as a first-of-its-kind solution in India's travel and travel insurance segment, as announced through a regulatory filing submitted to stock exchanges on April 20, 2026. The launch comes at a time when outbound travel from India continues to grow, even as visa processes across key destinations remain dynamic and, in some cases, increasingly stringent.
Under the new cover, if a customer's visa application (other than an immigrant or employment visa) is rejected, the company will indemnify the insured for non-recoverable advance payments towards accommodation and travel, including applicable official cancellation charges. As reported by The Hindu BusinessLine, PTI, Storyboard18, TravTalk, and NewsBytes, the companies clarified that the cover excludes immigrant and employment visa categories. The protection specifically targets the financial losses that travelers face when visa applications are unsuccessful. Visa uncertainty has long been one of the most unpredictable elements in international travel planning — often leaving travellers exposed to significant financial losses.
The offering is available across multiple segments including group tours, free independent travellers, meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions travel, as well as corporate travel, providing protection across customer categories. According to Storyboard18, TravTalk, and NewsBytes, this comprehensive approach ensures coverage for various travel scenarios and customer profiles. The companies emphasized that this structured protection addresses customer concerns around non-refundable expenses in the event of visa denials. By introducing a dedicated solution for visa-related disruptions, the companies are positioning the offering as both a reassurance tool and a value addition for travellers navigating complex international travel requirements.
Abraham Alapatt, President and Group Head 'Marketing, Service Quality, Value Added Services and Innovation' at Thomas Cook (India) Limited and SOTC Travel, emphasized the importance of financial protection in today's global travel environment. As reported by The Hindu BusinessLine, PTI, Storyboard18, TravTalk, and NewsBytes, Alapatt stated that visa decisions remain beyond a traveler's control and can have significant financial implications, making structured protection against non-refundable losses critical for travel planning. The initiative is intended to offer reassurance and help customers plan travel with greater confidence and peace of mind. Thomas Cook India and SOTC are not only expanding their ancillary services portfolio, but also responding to a broader shift in traveller expectations — where financial safeguards are becoming as important as the journey itself.
