
Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has launched the TCS Industrial Autonomy & Engineering Lab - Lights-Out Factory at its Sahyadri Park campus in Pune, marking a significant milestone in India's manufacturing automation landscape. According to reports from Business Standard, this facility represents India's maiden lights-out factory lab, designed to simulate how self-optimising factories can automate operations using the TCS Human+AI Service Autonomy Model. The lab focuses on autonomous factory concepts, digital simulation environments, vision AI, robotics and industrial automation, as well as software-defined engineering to create a comprehensive AI-powered manufacturing solution. As per TradingView News, Sreenivasa Chakravarti, Global Head and Vice President of Industrial Autonomy and Engineering at TCS, emphasized that the facility reimagines traditional manufacturing environments and builds factories for the future, stating that "We have built a facility that can help customers turn their aspiration of lights-out manufacturing into a reality."
The Pune facility brings together cutting-edge technologies including digital twins, robotics, industrial AI, factory control systems and real-time operational intelligence to create a seamless integration for live manufacturing environments. In a regulatory filing, TCS confirmed that the lab houses a fully robotic battery pack assembly line, making it India's first lab to demonstrate the principles of lights-out manufacturing. The facility enables simulations on this live set-up with multiple production stages to help manufacturers prototype, validate and scale AI-first production systems. The lab will support use cases including predictive maintenance, automated quality inspection, real-time process optimisation, human-machine collaboration and autonomous factory operations. According to TradingView News, the lab provides a tangible demonstration of how the Human+AI model can help enterprises progress from digitally enabled operations to increasingly autonomous production systems.
The lights-out factory concept represents a manufacturing unit where autonomous systems can run production with minimal human intervention. As per NDTV Profit, SKF's SVP Commercial & Operations Development Joakim Landholm commented that the facility demonstrates how manufacturing operations can move from digitally enabled processes towards increasingly autonomous production systems, stating that "Reducing friction has always been central to industrial progress, and the next wave of manufacturing will depend on smarter, more energy-efficient, and more reliable operations." The lab also includes digital twin and simulation environments to test factory scenarios virtually, along with vision AI, robotics, sensor-to-cloud industrial intelligence and software-defined engineering capabilities.
