Tata Power is establishing a global capability centre (GCC) in Odisha with an investment of ₹54.31 crore, as reported by Business Standard. The GCC will be located in Khordha district and is expected to be fully functional within the next three months. The investment will primarily fund IT infrastructure, software licenses, office setup, and manpower requirements to build the necessary technology and talent capabilities for operations.
The GCC will develop advanced digital solutions across multiple areas of the power and energy value chain using artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), generative AI and agentic AI to improve operational efficiency, asset health monitoring, demand forecasting and investment planning. According to Business Standard, the centre will also work with emerging technologies such as knowledge graphs, blockchain, digital twins and simulation systems for renewables, manufacturing, grids and pumped-hydro projects. The GCC will support the creation of digital products and offerings for prospective external customers, potentially opening commercialization opportunities. As a senior company executive noted, the global power and energy sector is undergoing rapid transformation driven by renewable energy integration, grid modernisation, digitalisation and changing customer expectations, with technologies like AI, data analytics, automation and cloud platforms now essential for improving operational efficiency and enabling data-driven decision-making.
The GCC is expected to create 110 high-skill employment opportunities in Odisha, as reported by Business Standard. The centre will bring together professionals across digital technologies, engineering and energy analytics, with specialized roles including AI specialists, data scientists, digital platform engineers, cloud infrastructure engineers and power-sector domain experts. Beyond direct employment, the GCC will contribute to the development of a broader technology and innovation ecosystem through partnerships with startups, universities and technology partners. According to Tata Power, the GCC will collaborate with academic institutions to support innovation, knowledge development and talent creation, strengthening the state's capabilities in digital engineering, energy technology and advanced software applications.
This marks the first GCC approved by Odisha after the state unveiled its dedicated policy framework — the Odisha Global Capability Centre (GCC) Policy last year. According to Business Standard, the policy targets investments of over ₹1,000 crore across five regional hubs in Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Puri, Paradip, Bargarh, Jharsuguda and Sambalpur. The GCC approval aligns with Odisha's strategy to diversify its industrial development beyond traditional strengths in metals, mining and manufacturing by attracting knowledge-intensive businesses and technology-enabled services. The centre is expected to strengthen the state's capabilities in digital engineering, energy technology and advanced software applications, supporting Odisha's broader goal of attracting technology-driven businesses and creating a robust innovation ecosystem.
