The latest decline comes even as the company's first-quarter performance offered some positives, particularly from Jaguar Land Rover (JLR). Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd reported a significant 80% year-on-year decline in consolidated net profit to ₹775 crore for Q1 FY27, compared to ₹3,924 crore in Q1 FY26. Sequentially, net profit also remained lower, falling from ₹5,783 crore in the March quarter. However, the company's Adjusted Profit After Tax (PAT) came in at ₹900 crore, beating Motilal Oswal's estimated loss of ₹120 crore. The company's total revenue from operations rose 9% year-on-year to ₹94,827 crore from ₹87,141 crore in the first quarter of the preceding fiscal year. However, profit before exceptional items and tax declined 59.34% to ₹1,600 crore, compared with ₹3,950 crore in Q1 FY26. EBITDA margin fell 130 basis points YoY to 7.4%, while EBIT margin declined 90 basis points to 2.4%. The performance was significantly impacted by raw material costs rising 76% in the June quarter, which weighed down earnings despite the revenue growth. The company also reported a forex loss of ₹150 crore against a forex gain of ₹523 crore in the year-ago quarter.
Despite the pricing pressures, Tata Motors PV reported exceptional volume growth in Q1. The company sold 82,574 cars and SUVs, up 46% YoY from 124,809 units in Q1 FY26, across domestic and international markets, including Tata Passenger Electric Mobility volumes. EV volumes more than doubled with 112% YoY growth, with the company achieving 46% year-on-year volume growth, more than twice the industry's 24% growth rate. As per the data from the Vahan Portal, retail registrations rose nearly 40% YoY, almost double the industry's growth rate. The company's Vahan market share rose more than 200 basis points to 14.3%, retaining the No. 2 position. Electric vehicle demand has also strengthened significantly, with EV sales more than doubling to over 34,000 units in Q1. Management reported that EV bookings had increased to nearly 3.5 times the average level before the Middle East crisis, with the company increasing production to narrow the gap between demand and supply.
JLR reported an EBIT margin of 2.8% in Q1 FY27, which was 90 basis points above estimates, while the domestic passenger vehicle EBIT margin of 4.3% was 250 basis points below estimates. JLR wholesale volumes were 79,300 units (excluding the China JV), down 9.2% YoY and down 16.8% versus Q4 FY26. Retail sales came in at 80,000 units, down 15.3% YoY. JLR maintained its target of achieving double-digit revenue growth over the next five years through greater propulsion flexibility, strengthening premium positioning, and increasing strategic focus on North America. The business, which accounts for around two-thirds of Tata Motors' overall revenue, also faced market disruptions linked to the conflict in the Middle East, along with the planned wind-down of outgoing Jaguar models ahead of the launch of Jaguar Type 01. Range Rover, Range Rover Sport and Defender model mix improved to 80.8% in Q1 FY27 from 77.2% YoY. JLR maintained its FY27 guidance despite the weaker-than-anticipated Q1 show, though management acknowledged that execution pace needs to be accelerated through the remainder of the year to offset the Q1 shortfall.
For the fiscal year ending March 2026, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles reported a consolidated revenue of ₹335,582 crore, representing a 23.68% decrease from ₹439,695 crore in March 2025.
