Tata Electronics will be signing 16 agreements at the SEMICON India 2026 conference with players across Europe, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, and India, CEO Randhir Thakur announced at the inauguration of Semicon India 2026, being organised from September 17 to September 19. According to reports from ETElectronicsWorld, the partnerships include companies like Nexperia and BESI from Europe, JSR, Fujifilm, Sumitomo, Sojitz, and Inomoto from Japan, Callington from Malaysia, Ascendas First Space from Singapore, L&T Semiconductors, Inox Air Products, Semiconductor Laboratory, and Gatishakti Vishwavidyalaya from India, along with partners from the US, Europe, and India, all specializing in different parts of the semiconductor value chain.
The memoranda of understanding signed on the sidelines of Semicon India 2026 include comprehensive collaborations across multiple semiconductor domains. Under its partnership with Nexperia, Tata Electronics will collaborate across front-end wafer fabrication, back-end assembly and test, and technology and ecosystem development. As part of the front-end collaboration, the companies are laying the groundwork for manufacturing Nexperia's MOSFET portfolio at Tata Electronics' upcoming 300-mm semiconductor fab in Dholera, Gujarat. The Nexperia-Tata Electronics partnership will also cover assembly and testing of Nexperia's discrete semiconductor products at Tata Electronics' semiconductor packaging facility in Jagiroad, Assam. During the event, the company signed seven pacts, including partnerships with Nexperia spanning across wafer fabrication, semiconductor assembly and testing, technology collaboration, and ecosystem development to strengthen semiconductor supply chain resilience and manufacturing capabilities in India.
Tata Electronics has signed multiple MoUs to build a localised supply chain for critical materials and infrastructure required for semiconductor manufacturing in India. The company entered into an MoU with Sumitomo Chemical Corporation to develop a localised supply chain for high-purity chemicals used in semiconductor manufacturing. High-purity chemicals are critical inputs in chip manufacturing, where even small levels of contamination can affect semiconductor production processes and yields. Under the MoU with Sumitomo Chemical, the companies will explore supplying semiconductor materials to Tata Electronics' upcoming semiconductor fabrication plant in Dholera, Gujarat, and opportunities to manufacture these materials and high-purity chemicals locally in India. The materials include photoresists, functional chemicals and high-purity chemicals such as hydrogen peroxide, isopropyl alcohol, ammonia water and sulfuric acid. Tata Electronics has also signed an MoU with INOX Air Products to develop a localised supply chain for high-purity gases required for semiconductor manufacturing in India. High-purity gases are used across several stages of semiconductor fabrication, making their reliable availability an important component of the manufacturing ecosystem.
In the packaging domain, Tata Electronics has entered into an MoU with Dutch semiconductor assembly solutions provider Besi to strengthen advanced packaging capabilities in India. Tata Electronics is investing $3 billion in its semiconductor packaging facility in Jagiroad, Assam. Under the collaboration, the company will leverage Besi's advanced packaging equipment and technologies, with both companies assessing opportunities to strengthen the local semiconductor equipment-support ecosystem. Tata Electronics has also entered into an MoU with Enomoto Co to collaborate on advanced semiconductor packaging capabilities and the localisation of lead-frame manufacturing in India. The partnership is aimed at developing domestic capabilities in advanced semiconductor packaging while increasing local manufacturing of lead frames, which are used to connect semiconductor devices to external circuits. Tata Electronics and Gati Shakti Vishwavidyalaya have signed an MoU to develop industry-ready talent for the growing semiconductor sector, focusing on academic curriculum development, joint certification programmes and industry-oriented skilling in semiconductor facility engineering and infrastructure systems.
CEO Thakur confirmed that Tata Electronics' 'fab' in Dholera, Gujarat and the packaging facility in Assam are on track to meet scheduled commitments made to the government. The company is establishing a semiconductor manufacturing facility in Gujarat with an investment of ₹91,526 crore, together with technology partner Taiwanese PSMC, with production capacity of around 50,000 wafer starts per month (WSPM). In Assam, the company is investing ₹27,120 crore in a manufacturing facility using indigenous semiconductor packaging technologies with a production capacity of 48 million units per day. Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that Semicon 2.0 has attracted ₹1 trillion in investment commitments, with funds expected to be deployed over the next two to three years. The minister confirmed that India's total semiconductor investments have reached ₹1 trillion, with five out of 12 chip projects under Semicon 1.0 having begun commercial production. As per Business Standard, Thakur emphasized that policy continuity under Semicon 2.0 is crucial as the company advances its $14 billion semiconductor projects, noting that the foundation of AI applications is the semiconductor hardware that enables AI model development.
