Suzlon Energy shares extended their losing streak for the fifth consecutive session on Tuesday, July 7, falling 1.77% to ₹54.49 as of 13:19 IST on the NSE. The stock has tumbled 17.76% in the last one year, significantly underperforming the benchmark Nifty 50 index which was down 0.02% at 24,424.75. The Nifty Energy index, of which Suzlon is a constituent, declined 0.84% on the day and has eased 1.35% in the last month. As per Business Standard, the stock's volume stood at 341.27 lakh shares today, compared to the daily average of 889.26 lakh shares in the last month, indicating increased selling pressure. The benchmark July futures contract is quoting at ₹54.72, down 1.62% on the day, reflecting continued bearish sentiment.
Nuvama recently downgraded Suzlon from 'Buy' to 'Hold' with a target price of ₹55, which coincides with the current trading level. As reported by NDTV Profit, the downgrade cited a lack of valuation comfort following the stock's massive recovery from its 52-week lows, alongside caution regarding the wind industry's near-term outlook. The timing of this downgrade appears to have contributed to the current selling pressure in the stock, with investors still digesting the implications of the brokerage's more cautious stance. The PE ratio stands at 25.8 based on TTM earnings ending March 26, reflecting the stock's premium valuation despite recent performance challenges.
Experts attribute the latest decline to project execution concerns including transmission bottlenecks, land acquisition issues, and regulatory approvals. As reported by NDTV Profit, the stock has experienced significant technical pressure following its recent recovery trajectory, with Suzlon recently staging a 49% recovery from its 52-week low of ₹38.19, hitting resistance near the ₹58–₹59 levels. Harshal Dasani, Business Head at INVasset PMS, explained that the share price drop is best read as execution-driven pressure hitting a stock that had run ahead of the operating cash-flow curve, rather than a structural break in the wind energy investment thesis.
On the technical front, the near-term picture needs the ₹54-₹56 zone to hold as first structural support. As per NDTV Profit, Dasani noted that a decisive break below ₹52 would deepen the correction toward the ₹48-₹50 band. The technical resistance and profit-taking activity have contributed to the current downward pressure on the stock price, with the stock trading near its resistance levels amid ongoing market volatility. Despite the correction, the company's strong order book of 5.9-6.4 GW provides more than two years of execution visibility.
