Rhetan TMT Ltd shares fell on Monday after nearing their 52-week high, despite the company announcing a significant business milestone. According to reports from LiveMint, the company received a licence from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) to manufacture Fe500D, Fe550 and Fe550D grade Thermo Mechanically Treated (TMT) bars. This certification enables the company to produce high-strength, high-ductility TMT bars that are widely used in large-scale infrastructure and construction projects.
The BIS certification significantly expands Rhetan TMT's addressable market by allowing it to cater to government and public sector projects, including highways, bridges, dams, metro rail networks and other infrastructure developments. As reported by LiveMint, the company said the certification also strengthens its product portfolio, enabling it to offer the full range of premium TMT steel products—from residential construction to heavy infrastructure applications. Higher-grade TMT bars typically command better pricing and are expected to improve the company's value-added product mix.
According to the company, obtaining BIS certification for these grades involves stringent testing of chemical composition, mechanical strength and ductility standards. As reported by LiveMint, Rhetan TMT believes the approval differentiates it from a large section of the unorganised steel market and reinforces its position as a quality-certified manufacturer. The company operates from Kadi, Gujarat, positioning it in one of India's key industrial hubs. Managing Director Shalin Ashok Shah stated that this achievement opens an entirely new addressable market for the company, which previously operated primarily in the standard-grade segment.
The BIS certification qualifies Rhetan TMT to supply high-strength, high-ductility steel products to government-funded and public sector undertaking (PSU) infrastructure projects across India. As reported by LiveMint, the company is now positioned to participate in tenders that mandate these higher ductility and strength specifications, a segment driven by the Union Government's annual capital expenditure of over ₹11 lakh crore on infrastructure. The certification marks a strategic expansion from standard Fe500 grades into premium segments required for critical infrastructure such as highways, bridges, dams, and metro rail systems.
