Oil India Limited (OIL), a Maharatna CPSE under the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, Government of India, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) for the establishment of Compressed Bio-Gas (CBG) plants based on Segregated Organic Municipal Solid Waste in Delhi. The MoU was signed on 30th July 2026 in the august presence of Smt. Rekha Gupta, Hon'ble Chief Minister of Delhi, and Sh. Pravesh Wahi, Hon'ble Mayor, Delhi along with senior officials from the Government of Delhi, MCD, and Oil India Limited. This framework establishes cooperation between OIL and MCD to facilitate the development of CBG plants in the national capital.
The latest MoU establishes two CBG plants with a combined capacity of 800 TPD (Tonnes Per Day) located at Tughlakabad and Okhla in Delhi. The initial phase of the project involves specific capacities of 500 TPD (Tonnes Per Day) and 300 TPD respectively. These plants will utilize segregated organic municipal solid waste generated within Delhi and are planned to produce 30 to 32 TPD (Tonnes Per Day) of Compressed Biogas. The plants are designed to convert biodegradable waste into renewable green fuel, with the initiative marking a significant milestone in fostering collaboration towards sustainable municipal solid waste management and production of clean, renewable energy.
The initiative aims to deliver multiple environmental and economic benefits for Delhi. The project will reduce landfill dependency, improve urban sanitation, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and support the Government of India's energy transition and circular economy objectives. This comprehensive approach to waste management and energy production aligns with national sustainability goals and reinforces Oil India Limited's commitment to expanding its waste to energy portfolio and contributing to the national objectives of Swachh Bharat Mission, SATAT, and Net Zero through the deployment of sustainable and environmentally responsible energy infrastructure.
