NTPC reported a robust 13% year-on-year growth in power generation to 117.9 billion units (BUs) in the July-September quarter, according to reports from Business Standard. This represents an increase from 104.4 BUs generated in the corresponding quarter of the previous fiscal year. The company attributed this performance to sustained operational efficiency across its operations, with the rise in generation being significant as electricity production remains the core operating metric for NTPC, India's largest integrated power utility. As per Rediff Moneynews, the company stated that NTPC recorded robust growth across generation, coal dispatch and power trading, reflecting sustained operational efficiency during the quarter.
Coal dispatch during Q2 FY 2026-27 stood at 11.899 million metric tonnes (MMT), as reported by Business Standard. This marked a significant 28.45% year-on-year growth compared to 9.260 MMT dispatched in Q2 FY 2025-26. The substantial increase in coal consumption reflects the company's enhanced power generation capabilities during the quarter and can support fuel availability for NTPC's thermal generation fleet, which continues to account for a major share of the company's electricity production. NTPC confirmed this growth in its official statement, highlighting the 28.45% increase in coal dispatch as a key performance indicator.
NTPC's power trading volume rose 22% to 15.06 BU in Q2 FY2026-27, compared to 12.34 BU in Q2 FY26, according to Business Standard. This growth in power trading activities demonstrates the company's expanded market presence and operational capabilities during the quarter, supporting the company's diversification strategy beyond conventional thermal power generation. The 22% increase in power trading volume reflects NTPC's successful expansion into energy trading and market participation, as reported by Rediff Moneynews.
Under the Ministry of Power, NTPC operates as India's largest power generation company, catering to the country's one-fourth energy demand alone, as reported by Business Standard. The company maintains an installed capacity of over 91 GW, with another 35% GW under construction, positioning it as a key player in India's power sector development. NTPC has set an ambitious target of reaching 149 GW of total installed capacity by 2032, including 60 GW from renewable energy sources. The company has diversified beyond conventional thermal and hydro power generation into solar and wind energy, battery storage, e-mobility, waste-to-energy, nuclear power and green hydrogen, as confirmed in the company's official statement.
