NLC India shares surged 14.01% to ₹371.15 following the release of strong Q4 FY26 financial results, touching a fresh all-time high of ₹387.70 on BSE. The stock hit an all-time intraday high of ₹387.70 during trading, significantly outperforming the broader market. According to latest reports, the stock rally was supported by strong earnings growth, expansion plans, and improved operational metrics, with investor sentiment remaining highly positive after the earnings announcement. The stock has delivered exceptional returns across virtually all timeframes, generating 60.53% returns over the past year compared to a 7.29% decline in the Sensex, generating alpha of 67.82 percentage points.
The company delivered exceptional Q4 FY26 performance with consolidated net profit soaring 189.12% to ₹1,393.46 crore compared to the same quarter in the previous year. As reported by Business Standard, revenue from operations jumped 31.45% to ₹5,042.46 crore in Q4 FY26 over Q4 FY25. Profit before tax (PBT) increased 66.39% year-on-year to ₹1,517.59 crore in the quarter ended March 31, 2026. The strong quarterly performance boosted investor confidence and triggered heavy buying in the stock. However, the extraordinary bottom-line surge demands closer scrutiny, with the effective tax rate plummeting to an unusually low 2.39% in Q4 FY26, down from 14.08% in Q3 FY26 and dramatically below the 48.65% rate in Q4 FY25. Without this tax benefit, the earnings growth would have been considerably more modest.
On a full-year basis, NLC India's consolidated net profit climbed 34.37% to ₹3,522.20 crore in FY26, with revenue from operations rising 14.44% to ₹17,489.53 crore compared to FY25. According to Business Standard, Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) stood at ₹7,475 crore in FY26, representing a 14.78% increase from ₹6,513 crore in FY25. The company achieved its highest-ever annual profit in company history on a consolidated basis. Operating profit before depreciation, interest, and tax reached a record ₹1,774.40 crores in Q4 FY26, translating to an operating margin of 35.19%—the highest in at least eight quarters, compared to 33.30% in Q3 FY26 and substantially outpacing the 22.45% recorded in Q1 FY25.
The company's board recommended a final dividend of ₹0.25 per equity share for the financial year 2025-26, demonstrating commitment to returning value to shareholders. According to Business Standard, this dividend recommendation reflects the company's strong financial position and consistent profitability across both quarterly and annual periods. The total FY26 dividend stands at ₹3.85 per share, including an interim dividend of ₹3.60 per share already paid, with the record date for the final dividend to be announced later. The company offers an attractive dividend yield of 1.37% compared to most peers, supported by a conservative payout ratio of 15.87%.
The company achieved significant operational milestones during FY 2025-26, generating gross power generation of 28.95 BU including RE power generation of 2.26 BU. NLC India significantly strengthened its renewable energy portfolio during FY26, adding 1,013 MW capacity including 660 MW thermal capacity from Unit 2 of Ghatampur Thermal Power Plant, 300 MW solar project in Rajasthan, and 3 MW rooftop solar installations. The company also received approvals for a 600 MW solar project from SECI and an integrated 300 MW / 1,800 MWh Energy Storage System (ESS) project, with seven renewable assets totaling 1.4 GW transferred to NIRL. The company maintained 100% collection efficiency from power debtors, reflecting strong financial discipline, while achieving its highest-ever annual coal production from the Talabira II & III open-cast projects.
The company received approvals for the newly commissioned Pachwara South Coal Mine with 9 MTPA capacity and the New Patrapara South Coal Mine, with the Government approving the proposed listing of NIRL through equity issuance and partial stake disinvestment. The company also expanded its mineral exploration footprint after receiving composite licences from the Government of Chhattisgarh for Semhardih Phosphorite & Limestone Block and Raipura Phosphorite & Limestone Block, supporting its long-term diversification strategy. However, beneath the headline-grabbing profit surge lies a more nuanced picture, with the company's return on equity of 11.02% and return on capital employed of 6.52% falling short of industry benchmarks. The debt-to-equity ratio of 0.99 and interest costs rising to ₹364.31 crores in Q4 FY26 reflect the capital-intensive nature of power generation, with the company operating with a debt-to-EBITDA ratio of 5.64 times.
