The New India Assurance Company shares experienced exceptional momentum on Monday, September 7, with the stock rallying 5.5% to hit its 52-week high of ₹242.65 before paring gains to close at ₹234.35 on the BSE. According to reports from LiveMint, the stock opened at ₹234.35 and subsequently surged as much as 5.5% to reach the day's high, though it later fell as much as 7.5% to touch an intraday low of ₹224.40 as broader market weakness weighed on sentiment. The stock has been on a remarkable roll, more than doubling investors' money in just five months and five days, rising from its 52-week low of ₹116.95 hit on March 30. Over the past six months, the stock has surged 68%, while year-to-date gains stand at 48.51%, demonstrating sustained investor confidence despite recent quarterly challenges.
The recent surge in New India Assurance shares is largely attributed to bullish sentiment surrounding the company's participation in the NSE IPO. As reported by LiveMint, the company holds 1.42% of the pre-offer equity shares of NSE and is selling up to 1.05 crore shares of NSE with a face value of ₹1 each. At the weighted average cost of acquisition of ₹0.32 per share, the total cost comes to ₹33.6 lakh. The company is listed among the key selling public sector shareholders in NSE's draft red herring prospectus (DRHP), making its holding particularly important as investors assess the potential benefits from the proposed public issue. The proposed NSE IPO is emerging as a major catalyst, with the scale representing nearly 6% of NSE's paid-up equity capital and potentially raising approximately ₹30,000 crore to ₹31,500 crore if it reaches its full size.
Trading activity reflected the strong investor interest, with elevated volumes across both major exchanges. As reported by NDTV Profit, on the BSE, 26.69 lakh shares worth ₹57.83 crore had changed hands, while on the NSE, 421.52 lakh shares worth ₹920.04 crore were traded. The stock has delivered strong gains across multiple timeframes, with advanced more than 18% over the past one week, 28% over one month, 50% over three months, and 63% in the past six months. The strong stock-market performance comes despite a weak first quarter for the insurer, demonstrating that investors are looking beyond short-term financial results to the company's long-term prospects and operational metrics.
Despite the strong stock performance, the company reported disappointing first quarter results for FY27. According to reports from NDTV Profit, New India Assurance reported a consolidated net loss of ₹244 crore for Q1 FY27, compared with a net profit of ₹392 crore in the corresponding quarter a year earlier. However, the company showed resilience in premium collection, with net premium earned increasing 3.4% year-on-year to ₹9,747 crore from ₹9,424 crore in the previous year. The company's solvency ratio stood at 1.80 in the quarter, compared with 1.84 in the previous quarter.
The company's financial performance showed significant improvement in FY26, with profit after tax growing 40% to ₹1,383.59 crore from ₹988.07 crore in the previous year. According to Mint, net premium increased by 8.30% year-on-year to ₹39,330.61 crore in FY26 from ₹36,315.15 crore in FY25, while earned premium rose by 8.75% YoY to ₹38,462.24 crore. This strong operational performance, combined with the upcoming NSE IPO participation, has contributed to the stock's remarkable rally and positive investor sentiment.
