MG is preparing to launch its first plug-in hybrid vehicle in India under the JSW MG umbrella, introducing the Wuling Starlight 560 as a badged model. According to reports, the SUV is positioned to be India's most affordable plug-in hybrid SUV when launched, targeting the competitive PHEV segment with aggressive pricing strategy. The Wuling brand operates under SAIC and will be badged as MG in India, representing a strategic move to bring plug-in hybrid technology to a wider audience in the Indian market. MG has confirmed the launch timeline for October 2026, positioning the vehicle to compete directly with the Mahindra XEV 9S in the seven-seater plug-in hybrid SUV segment.
The Starlight 560 features a 1.5-litre petrol engine combined with a 20.5kWh battery system, delivering an electric range of approximately 100km. As reported, the SUV measures 4,745mm in length with a wheelbase of 2,810mm, positioning it above the Hector in MG's lineup while competing directly with the Mahindra XEV 9S. The vehicle's technical specifications make it the most affordable PHEV option in the market, with the combined output of around 197hp and 230Nm from the plug-in hybrid setup. The SUV can accelerate from 0-100kph in just 9.7 seconds and has a top speed of 170kph, demonstrating strong performance capabilities for the segment.
The SUV incorporates a large grille design with 18-inch alloy wheels and maintains a 7-seater layout specifically for the Indian market. According to reports, the interior features include a central 12.8-inch touchscreen display, digital instrument cluster, and comprehensive premium features expected in the segment. The vehicle is described as being fairly roomy with the seven-seater configuration designed to appeal to Indian market preferences, offering spacious accommodation for multiple passengers. The design emphasizes a tech-packed, roomy, and comfortable cabin with modern features expected in the premium SUV segment.
The Starlight 560 represents MG's strategy to expand volumes in the Indian market following the success of the Windsor model. As reported, the pricing and appeal of plug-in hybrid technology are expected to drive market acceptance, with the vehicle positioned to change the market dynamics by making PHEV technology more accessible to a wider audience in India. The launch aims to capture the growing demand for hybrid and electric vehicle technology in the Indian automotive market, with the aggressive pricing strategy making it the most affordable PHEV option available. MG is also developing an electric version of the Starlight 560 with a 56.7 kWh battery pack and claimed range of around 500km per charge, featuring front-wheel drive configuration and 136hp output to compete in the EV segment.
