Maruti Suzuki India is capitalizing on the growing premium hatchback market, with the segment currently estimated at around 50,000 units per month. According to Partho Banerjee, senior executive officer for marketing and sales at Maruti Suzuki India, the company commands approximately 70% market share in this premium segment. The company's premium hatchback sales demonstrated strong momentum, growing 28% between April and August compared to 17% growth for the industry during the same period. Latest data shows the Baleno sells around 16,500 units per month, while the Brezza achieved 17,000 units last month and the Swift sold close to 20,000 units. The premium hatchback segment is growing faster than the overall industry, with Banerjee expecting the premium hatchback market to remain around the 600,000-unit level this year, with the festive season potentially providing additional boost.
Looking ahead, Maruti Suzuki expects the overall Indian passenger vehicle market to reach 6.1-6.3 million units by 2030. As reported by Business Standard, SUVs are estimated to account for 62-63% of the market by then, leaving roughly 37-38% for hatchbacks and multi-purpose vehicles. The company estimates the relevant market could reach around 2.5 million units by 2030, while its own business in this space could potentially double from around 600,000 units currently to 1.2 million units. Banerjee expects monthly industry volumes to rise from the current 4.3-4.4 lakh level, translating into an annual market of around 5.3-5.4 million units. The company currently has a backlog of around 1.8 lakh vehicles.
According to the latest data, Maruti Suzuki currently sells around 16,500 Baleno units per month, with the company having fully utilized production capacity for the Baleno and Fronx at its Hansalpur plant in Gujarat. The company launched a Baleno refresh this weekend, starting at ₹6.09 lakh (ex-showroom). Banerjee noted that the company's recent sales demonstrate hatchbacks continue to have substantial demand, with the Swift also selling close to 20,000 units and models such as the WagonR operating at similar volumes. The Baleno accounts for about one-third of premium hatchback sales, with the company selling close to 83,177 units of the model over the last five months of the financial year.
The refreshed Baleno will feature advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) with Level 2 ADAS, which Banerjee described as a segment-first, comprising eight functions including advanced emergency braking, lane keep assist, lane departure prevention, adaptive cruise control, high-beam assist, vehicle sway warning and forward collision warning. The car comes with six airbags, electronic stability programme, ABS with EBD, hill-hold control, reverse parking sensors and tyre-pressure monitoring system, retaining a 360-degree camera and head-up display. Other additions include ventilated front seats with leatherette upholstery, a 22.86-cm (9-inch) SmartPlay Pro+ infotainment system, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a Clarion sound system and Qi-certified wireless smartphone charger with active cooling. The Baleno is powered by Maruti Suzuki's Z12E engine, developing 61 kW of maximum power and 112.4 Nm of peak torque, with manual and AGS transmission options offering claimed fuel efficiency of 23.80 km/l and 24.77 km/l respectively, representing 6.4% and 7.9% higher than the outgoing model.
The new Baleno launch gives Maruti Suzuki an opportunity to strengthen the Nexa channel, which was created 11 years ago to cater to an emerging set of customers looking for a more premium retail experience. The company is reworking customer loyalty programs and working on managing the repurchase cycle more systematically, allowing customers to move to the next product based on their evolving needs. Within Nexa, a customer buying a Fronx could move up to the Grand Vitara and eventually to the e Vitara. Banerjee noted that the company intends to create upgrade pathways within both channels while also allowing customers to move between them, such as someone buying the WagonR moving to a Brezza and eventually to Victoris. The company currently has 17 models under the Nexa channel, with its EV portfolio also now entering the channel. Bookings for the updated Baleno are open at ₹11,000.
