
India has achieved a historic milestone with Delhi launching its first E85 fuel station at Pusa Road, with the ethanol-based fuel priced at ₹82.12 per litre, ₹20 cheaper than E20 petrol. Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri inaugurated the facility on Friday (June 5), marking the first step in the government's plan to expand E85 fuel availability across the country over the next two years. The rollout will begin with around 50 to 100 ethanol dispensing stations in Delhi-NCR, Pune, Mumbai and Nagpur, with the network expected to grow to 500 stations by the end of 2026 and further to 5,000 stations across major cities by the end of 2027. This aggressive expansion timeline will help raise India's aggregate ethanol blending level to nearly 26% by 2030-31. The launch comes alongside the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R Flex Fuel, which was launched on World Environment Day, marking a significant advancement in India's alternative fuel ecosystem.
While E85 offers attractive pricing at ₹82.12 per litre versus ₹102.12 for E20 petrol, the fuel's adoption faces significant practical challenges due to limited vehicle compatibility in the Indian market. Currently, only a small number of vehicles are compatible with E85 fuel, with Hero MotoCorp introducing the Splendor+ Flex Fuel and HF Deluxe Flex Fuel models for two-wheelers, both capable of running on ethanol blends up to E85. Suzuki has also entered the market with the Gixxer SF 250 FFV, while Maruti Suzuki has displayed the Wagon R Flex Fuel though launch timeline and pricing remain unconfirmed. Most petrol-powered vehicles presently on Indian roads are not equipped to handle such high ethanol blends, creating a significant barrier to widespread adoption. The recently launched E85-compliant Hero Splendor+ costs around ₹6,000 more than the standard version, requiring buyers to weigh the lower fuel price against both the higher purchase cost and the possibility of increased fuel consumption.
Despite E85's lower pump price, vehicle efficiency takes a significant hit due to the fuel's different energy content. According to Zee News, data from flex-fuel vehicles across the world suggests a drop in mileage of around 20 to 30 percent when running on E85, depending on engine setup, tuning and driving conditions. A motorcycle delivering around 50 kmpl on petrol may return closer to 40 to 42 kmpl when running on E85, though the lower fuel price can help balance running costs, especially for riders covering longer distances regularly. The E85 blend contains 85% ethanol and 15% petrol, with ethanol having around one-third lower energy content than petrol, requiring vehicles to consume a larger quantity of fuel to deliver the same performance level as petrol. E85 dispensers will have separate branding and identification to help motorists distinguish between the two fuels, with the current E20 petrol priced at ₹102.12 per litre and premium XP95 petrol at ₹109.24 per litre.
Maruti Suzuki has unveiled the flex-fuel version of the Wagon R, marking a significant development for India's automotive sector. According to reports from Zee News, the Wagon R Flex Fuel is designed to handle blends ranging from E20 to E100, representing a major advancement in alternative fuel technology for the Indian market. The car has been engineered specifically for ethanol-blended fuel compatibility with advanced ECU calibration capable of seamlessly adapting to any ethanol blend. As reported by Zee News, flex fuel is a blend of regular petrol and a biofuel, like ethanol, allowing the same engine to run on 100% petrol, 100% ethanol, or any mix of the two in the same fuel tank. Oil Minister Hardeep Puri emphasized that E85 fuel is meant exclusively for specially designed flex-fuel vehicles equipped with compatible engines, with the transition towards E85 vehicles being guided by rigorous testing and validation by automobile manufacturers. According to NDTV Profit, the transition is being propelled by industry participation, consumer demand, growing ecosystem readiness, besides its cheaper price, with the government noting that automakers themselves see significant potential in the segment and are increasingly introducing both two-wheeler and four-wheeler models capable of running on E85 fuel.
Fuel availability remains the biggest hurdle for wider E85 adoption, with E85 dispensing stations currently available only at a few select locations, with Delhi among the first cities to get access. The government has outlined a phased expansion plan targeting around 500 ethanol fuel stations by the end of 2026, followed by nearly 5,000 outlets by 2027. Until this infrastructure expansion is complete, E85 will be confined to a small set of users and pilot corridors, limiting its practical benefits for most drivers. The lower price advantage is visible but the actual benefit for most drivers will depend on how fast vehicles and infrastructure scale up together. While the E85 fuel blend contains 80-85% ethanol and 15% petrol, offering GHG emissions reduction of 61% compared to conventional petrol vehicles and enhanced performance with ethanol's Research Octane Number above 100, the current market readiness remains limited, requiring both vehicle manufacturers and fuel retailers to accelerate their preparations for widespread adoption.
