India's automobile retail market delivered its best-ever July performance in 2026, with registrations rising 25.89% year-on-year to 25.91 lakh units, according to data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA). This marks the first time all six major vehicle categories achieved their highest-ever July retail volumes simultaneously. Passenger vehicle sales crossed the 4 lakh mark for the first time, registering growth of 19.13% YoY to 4,16,555 units, while two-wheeler registrations exceeded 18 lakh units with a surge of 28.25%. The strong performance was supported by rural markets, GST-led affordability improvements, and an early build-up towards the festive period.
Latest data from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) confirms the robust manufacturing performance, with passenger vehicle dispatches rising 34.3% YoY to 4,57,810 units in July 2026, up from 3,40,772 units in July 2025. SIAM Director General Rajesh Menon highlighted that "India's auto industry delivered its strongest-ever July sales, with robust double-digit growth across passenger vehicles, three-wheelers and two-wheelers." Total two-wheeler sales rose 22.6% to 19,23,483 units compared to 15,69,120 units in July 2025, while three-wheeler dispatches increased 33.4% to 92,560 units from 69,403 units in the previous year. The numbers suggest that July's acceleration was not confined to one vehicle category, with domestic dispatch growth accompanied by a 24.8% increase in overall production and 25.1% rise in exports, indicating the upturn reflected a combination of domestic demand, festive-season inventory creation and stronger overseas shipments.
The two-wheeler segment demonstrated broad-based growth with scooter dispatches rising 23.7% to 798,190 units and motorcycle volumes growing 20.7% to 1.07 million units in July 2026. Moped dispatches jumped 48.6% to 50,497 units on a smaller base. During April-July 2026, scooter wholesales increased 28.9% to 2.98 million units while motorcycle dispatches rose 15.6% to 4.38 million units, with overall two-wheeler wholesales expanding 20.9% to 7.55 million units. Two-wheeler exports rose 27.7% in July to 554,258 units, with motorcycle exports climbing 29.8% and scooter exports growing 23.8% during the month. This provided manufacturers with a second growth engine alongside the recovery in domestic demand.
Commercial vehicle registrations increased 24.04% YoY to 99,666 units, supported by freight activity and infrastructure development. The Treo electric in the 3W-Passenger segment recorded the highest sales volume at 7,610 units, which was broadly unchanged from 7,613 units a year earlier. Tractor registrations increased 28.10% YoY to 1,17,349 units, making agriculture-linked vehicles another major contributor to July's record performance. Construction equipment recorded the highest percentage growth among the six categories, rising 46.07% to 5,501 units, albeit from a considerably smaller base.
The changing fuel mix of India's passenger vehicle market shows pure petrol/ethanol vehicles accounting for 41.68% of PV registrations, compared with 47.62% in July 2025. Alternative powertrains continue to expand, with CNG/LPG vehicles at 24.67%, hybrids at 8.02%, and battery electric vehicles at 7.90% of passenger vehicle registrations. Combined, these alternative powertrains represented approximately 40.59% of passenger vehicle registrations, putting them just 1.09 percentage points behind petrol's 41.68% share. Despite the record retail performance, passenger vehicle dealer inventory was estimated at around 33-35 days during July, with manufacturers and dealers preparing for the upcoming festive period. Maruti Suzuki is also stepping up efforts in alternative fuels, with the board approving setting up four biogas plants in the first phase at a cost of ₹561 crore to substitute for imported CNG and support cleaner mobility.
