Drug major Lupin has launched Formoflo-G MDI, described as the world's first fixed-dose triple-combination metered-dose inhaler (MDI) for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), in India following approval from the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI). According to the company's exchange filing, the inhaler combines glycopyrronium bromide, formoterol fumarate and fluticasone propionate in a single device for the long-term management and treatment of moderate to severe COPD. The product is available as a twice-daily, single-strength fixed dose. The launch represents a significant milestone in respiratory care and broadens treatment options for COPD patients in the country.
The launch comes as Lupin seeks to strengthen its position in India's respiratory medicines market, where the company ranked second in the respiratory therapy segment based on IQVIA MAT March 2026 data. As reported by Lupin, the company estimates that more than 55 million people in India live with COPD, a chronic respiratory disease that remains a major cause of death and disability. The new formulation is aimed at expanding treatment options for these patients, with the product serving as a beacon of hope for over 55 million people affected by this debilitating condition.
Nilesh Gupta, Managing Director of Lupin, stated that Formoflo-G MDI reflects the company's commitment to addressing unmet patient needs through differentiated, high-quality therapies. According to the company, by combining innovation with accessibility, the aim is to improve outcomes for patients living with respiratory diseases. Rajeev Sibal, president of India Region Formulations at Lupin, emphasized that the product brings three established therapies together in a single inhaler, strengthening the company's respiratory portfolio and providing healthcare professionals with an important treatment option for appropriate COPD patients. With the introduction of Formoflo-G MDI, Lupin reinforces its leadership in respiratory care, emphasising innovation-driven therapies to better serve patients' needs.
Analysts view this launch as a strategic move by Lupin to consolidate its position in the respiratory segment and enhance its competitive edge in the pharmaceutical market. The introduction of Formoflo-G MDI is expected to drive growth and provide a significant boost to Lupin's respiratory portfolio. The DCGI approval and commercial launch of this first-to-market therapy strengthens Lupin's high-margin domestic respiratory franchise, delivering strong competitive value and addressing an estimated 55 million COPD patients in India. The near-term price impact is expected to be a modest positive re-rating of around +1, reflecting the gradual financial benefits that domestic product launches typically accrue over multiple quarters rather than immediately spiking quarterly earnings.
