British brewer Lion Brewery Company, founded in London in 1836, has re-entered the Indian market after an absence of more than six decades. According to reports from PTI, the company launched its premium beer portfolio in Delhi as it seeks to tap into the country's fast-growing premium beer segment. The brewer, which has historical links with India and was among early producers and exporters of India Pale Ale (IPA), views India as part of its heritage story rather than just a new market opportunity. The London-founded, Singapore-based company has now officially announced its move earlier this year, with two core beer brands now available to customers in Delhi. As reported by PTI, Will Julius, Lion Brewery Co's co-founder and managing director, described India as a special part of the company's history and not just another export destination, with the rapid growth of its premium beer market making it particularly attractive at this time.
Lion Brewery has partnered with Copperdrop Spirits as its exclusive importer and distributor in India, with plans to expand distribution to Haryana and Uttar Pradesh in the next phase. As reported by PTI, the company has debuted in India with its Island Lager and Pale Ale, currently available in the Delhi market in 330 ml bottles at a maximum retail price of ₹230 (US$2.63). Both beers are now available at selected outlets in Delhi, with Island Lager featuring a crisp, tropical-style lager with 4.7% ABV and Pale Ale offering a balanced hop-and-malt profile with 4.5% ABV. Rohan Khare of Copperdrop Spirits noted strong potential for premium international craft brands in India, stating that Lion brewery co. combines heritage, authenticity, and quality which resonate strongly with today's Indian consumer. Further formats are expected to be introduced in the coming period.
The company is targeting India's premium beer market, which is experiencing accelerated growth of over 40 per cent annually. According to PTI, this growth is driven by rising urban disposable incomes, a shift toward milder or craft options, and a massive surge in microbreweries. Industry estimates cited by Indian and regional brewing publications value India's beer market at approximately US$4.5 billion in 2023 and forecast annual growth of about 8-10% through 2028, with premium and super-premium beers expected to outperform the wider category as rising urban incomes and greater consumer experimentation encourage drinkers to move beyond mainstream strong lager. The craft beer segment is expected to reach $1 billion by 2027, driven by changing consumer preferences and rising incomes.
The launch reconnects the modern brewer with an important part of its history, as the original Lion Brewery was established beside the River Thames in London in 1836 and became one of several British breweries exporting well-hopped ales to India and other overseas trading posts during the nineteenth century. The brewery played a significant role in expanding the London export trade that established 'India Pale Ale' brand internationally, with additional hops improving flavour stability and helping maintain quality during lengthy sea journeys to India and other parts of the British Empire. Lion plans to extend distribution into the neighbouring states of Haryana and Uttar Pradesh over the coming months, potentially creating a wider northern Indian platform before entering other major cities. The brewery, which was revived in 2018, has since rebuilt its portfolio around premium beers crafted to deliver quality and consistency.
