
Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has officially unveiled the first-ever Range Rover Electric on September 2, 2025, and opened global order books including India. The vehicle is built at JLR's Solihull plant alongside hybrid and ICE models on a flexible propulsion platform, featuring twin 260 kW permanent magnet motors delivering 405 kW and 850 Nm of torque via a single electric motor. The Range Rover Electric starts at £154,070 (around ₹1.84 crore) in the UK and $138,000 (around ₹1.22 crore) in the US, before taxes and other charges. Sources indicated the car is available for booking in India for a token amount of ₹10 lakh. The vehicle offers a range of up to 600 km under the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP), representing a major milestone as the first fully-electric Range Rover to be produced at JLR's Solihull factory. The luxury vehicle, which can reach 60mph in 4.3 seconds, heralds a new era of enhanced refinement and capability for the marque.
The launch is accompanied by a large-scale transformation of JLR's manufacturing operations, with the company investing significantly in electrification capabilities. Around 10,500 employees across the West Midlands have been upskilled for electrification, including 9,000 in Solihull and a further 1,500 across England's West Midlands. JLR's Electric Propulsion Manufacturing Centre in Wolverhampton now produces battery packs and electric drive units alongside internal combustion engines. The transformation includes new battery and electric drive unit production lines and comprehensive workforce reskilling to support the electrification strategy. Martin Limpert, managing director of Range Rover, described the launch as the result of a decade of considered engineering, stating it represents a pivotal moment for both Range Rover and JLR, securing jobs and providing economic benefits for the region. The company said the luxury vehicle had undergone testing equivalent to 38 trips around the world, more than any other Range Rover, demonstrating its comprehensive development process.
JLR's financial performance has deteriorated significantly, with revenue falling 21% to £22.9 billion in FY26. As reported by Business Standard, the company posted a loss after tax of £244 million in FY26, compared to a profit of £1.8 billion in the previous year. The luxury carmaker's adjusted EBIT margin dropped to 0.7% in FY26 from 8.5% in FY25, impacted by a major cyber incident, higher US tariffs, and challenging market conditions in China. The pressure continued in the June quarter, with revenue declining 9.6% year-on-year to £5.97 billion and EBIT margin falling 120 basis points to 2.8%. The company faced additional challenges in 2026, with profits dropping to £66 million in the first quarter after a fire at a key Norwegian supplier disrupted supply chains. However, the delayed launch of the electric Range Rover provides a much-needed moment of positivity for JLR as it counts the cost of Donald Trump's tariff wars and supply chain disruption.
The Range Rover franchise carries significant strategic importance for Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, where JLR accounts for nearly four-fifths of consolidated revenue. According to Business Standard, JLR Chief Financial Officer Richard Molyneux highlighted that Range Rover, Range Rover Sport and Defender accounted for around 81% of first-quarter sales and are the three vehicles that drive profitability. The company has lined up four new products over the coming months, including the Range Rover Sport Electric, Range Rover GT, and Jaguar Type 01, with the benefits from this product cycle expected to take time to materialize. David Bailey, professor of business economics at the University of Birmingham, described the launch as the start of a new era for JLR, representing a profound change for the company and the West Midlands supply chain. Range Rover's bespoke commissioning service offers buyers extended choice of near limitless paint colours and finishes, elevated materials, tailored colour combinations and personalisation details including unique embroidery.
The Range Rover Electric delivers exceptional performance with 542 horsepower and 850 Newton-meters of torque, making it the torquiest Range Rover ever put into production. The vehicle is powered by a 118.5kWh lithium-ion battery pack, providing a WLTP-rated range of 372 miles. Public recharging capabilities support speeds of up to 350kW, enabling 220 kilometres of range to be added in as little as 10 minutes. The model has undergone extensive testing, covering over 1.5 million kilometres across virtual simulations and real-world conditions from sub-zero arctic temperatures to scorching desert heat, demonstrating its capability to perform anywhere. The near-identical exterior appearance to current petrol and diesel Range Rover models is designed to appeal to loyal customers making the transition to electric without compromising on brand identity.
