Jindal Stainless has successfully commissioned a 1.2 million tonne per annum (MTPA) stainless steel melt shop (SMS) in Indonesia, marking a significant milestone in the company's expansion strategy. According to reports from Fortune India, this facility has been established under a joint venture arrangement and represents part of the company's ongoing ₹5,700 crore expansion plan. With this development, the company's annual melting capacity has now scaled up to 4.2 MTPA, significantly enhancing its production capabilities. The new 1.2 MTPA facility in Indonesia brings JSL's total melting capacity to 4.2 MTPA (including 3 MTPA in India), providing the company with enhanced raw material security and a stronger competitive edge in Southeast Asian and global markets.
Complementing the Indonesian facility commissioning, Jindal Stainless is gearing up to commission a new 1.1 MTPA Hot Rolled Annealed Pickled (HRAP) line and a 0.17 MTPA Cold Rolled Annealed Pickled (CRAP) line in Jajpur, Odisha by Q4FY27 and Q2FY27 respectively. As reported by Fortune India, these facilities are part of the earlier announced outlay of ₹1,900 crore. Additionally, the company has earmarked a fresh investment of ₹900 crore towards augmenting cold-rolled capacities at Hisar and Kharagpur, West Bengal, expected to be commissioned by Q2FY28. These new and expanded downstream facilities will enable production of thinner cold rolled products tailored for high-growth industries. The fresh ₹900 crore investment is focused on the "finish" while the Indonesian facility handles the "melt," with the company targeting high-growth industries that require thinner, high-precision stainless steel products.
With the enhancement in melting and downstream capacities, Jindal Stainless is targeting to achieve a sales volume of 3.5 MTPA by FY29, delivering double-digit CAGR over the next three years. The company's Cold Rolled Annealed Pickled (CRAP) capacity will increase from 2.05 MTPA in FY26 to 2.67 MTPA by FY28, an increase of 0.62 MTPA. Once all downstream expansion projects are commissioned, the total CRAP capacity will account for 64% of the total melt capacity. This shift toward downstream products typically translates to higher margins and better value addition, with the company positioning itself to serve emerging export markets in the US, Germany, Italy, South Korea, and Japan. The company, which currently has an annual turnover of over ₹40,000 crore, is India's largest stainless steel player and ranks among the fifth largest globally.
Abhyuday Jindal, Managing Director of Jindal Stainless, stated that the commissioning of the Indonesia facility ahead of schedule, alongside a significant push in downstream capabilities, reflects the commitment to raw material security and an integrated approach to growth. As reported by Fortune India, this development demonstrates the company's strategic focus on expanding its global footprint while maintaining operational excellence. "The commissioning of the Indonesia facility ahead of schedule, alongside a significant push in downstream capabilities, reflects our commitment to raw material security and integrated approach to growth," Jindal emphasized. Tarun Khulbe, CEO of Jindal Stainless, added that the capacity and production enhancements are in line with the robust domestic potential, with the activation of new capacities set to unlock the next phase of growth and build world-class capabilities in stainless steel. "Expansion in melt capacity and corresponding strengthening of downstream facilities speaks volumes about our commitment to fuel the Indian growth story," Khulbe stated.
With 16 manufacturing facilities globally and a presence in 12 countries, Jindal Stainless is positioning itself to serve emerging export markets while reiterating its commitment to sustainability. The company is utilizing Electric Arc Furnaces (EAF) to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and maximize the use of recyclable scrap. This strategic expansion positions JSL to capitalize on the growing demand for stainless steel in high-precision applications across multiple industries, while strengthening its competitive position in both domestic and international markets. The company plans to strengthen its global customer base by expanding its presence across key and emerging export markets, including US, Germany, Italy, South Korea, and Japan.
