Indian Railway Finance Corporation (IRFC) Ltd. has sanctioned and disbursed a ₹1,000 crore term loan to Maharashtra State Power Generation Company Ltd. (MAHAGENCO), marking its first funding transaction of the new financial year. According to reports from CNBC TV18, this significant loan sanction represents IRFC's continued expansion beyond its traditional railway financing into broader infrastructure sectors. The transaction follows closely after IRFC's ₹12,842 crore loan agreement with Hindustan Urvarak & Rasayan Ltd., highlighting its growing presence as a diversified infrastructure financier.
Manoj Kumar Dubey, Chairman and Managing Director of IRFC, expressed optimism about the new financial year, stating, "A wonderful start to the new financial year. Our first disbursement going to a trusted business partner is not just a transaction, it is a statement of confidence, continuity, and commitment." He congratulated the team for this early achievement and encouraged them to sustain the momentum. As reported by CNBC TV18, this follows IRFC's recent ₹12,842 crore loan agreement with Hindustan Urvarak & Rasayan Ltd., highlighting its growing presence as a diversified infrastructure financier. Dubey further stated that "Together, we will ensure that this year is defined by strong partnerships and outstanding performance, while staying aligned with our core mandate."
Originally established in 1986 as the dedicated financing arm of the Ministry of Railways, IRFC has expanded its lending portfolio to sectors including power generation, transmission, mining, fuel and coal, logistics, and urban transport. According to CNBC TV18, the company maintains a zero non-performing asset (NPA) profile even as it scales up lending across sectors. MAHAGENCO, Maharashtra's largest power generation utility, is expected to use the funds to strengthen its operational capabilities and support electricity supply in the state. The company continues to maintain a robust asset quality profile while deepening its engagement across infrastructure segments.
Shares of IRFC ended 1.15% higher at ₹92.90 ahead of the announcement on Monday, as reported by CNBC TV18. However, the stock has declined about 26% this year, indicating mixed investor sentiment despite the positive loan sanction news. The company stated it will continue to deepen its engagement across infrastructure segments while maintaining financial discipline.
