IndiGo has introduced a new entry-level fare option called IndiGo Lite for economy class passengers. According to reports from IndiGo, this fare is designed specifically for travellers who fly with only cabin baggage and allows passengers to pay only for services they actually use. Bookings for IndiGo Lite open on July 1, 2026, with travel under this fare beginning July 15, 2026. The fare is available exclusively on IndiGo's direct channels, including its website, mobile app, and contact centre, and will not be listed on third-party booking platforms. As reported by NewsX, IndiGo is the first airline to launch unbundled basic economy fares across its domestic and international network in India, making this a significant market innovation. The core idea behind IndiGo Lite is straightforward: if you are not checking in any luggage, you should not have to pay for that service, giving travellers more control over their travel spending by letting them choose only the services they need.
IndiGo Lite will be available on both domestic and international non-stop routes for one-way, round-trip, and multi-city travel. As reported by IndiGo, the fare applies to both adult and child travellers. Since bookings are only available through IndiGo's own channels, passengers will need to visit the airline's website, use the mobile app, or call the contact centre to access this fare. The roughly two-week gap between booking opening and travel start gives passengers time to plan their trips under this new option. According to NewsX, the fare is valid for adult and child passengers and is available exclusively through IndiGo's direct booking channels. However, IndiGo Lite is not available on connecting and code-share flights and cannot be booked under group or corporate travel. The fare also does not apply to infant bookings or unaccompanied minors, and passengers who book under special fare categories like student, senior citizen and armed forces concessions will not be eligible to book the Lite fare.
IndiGo Lite offers cabin baggage allowance of up to 7 kgs and provides customers with a lower base price with auto-assigned seat at no additional cost. According to IndiGo, customers can personalize their journey through optional add-ons, enabling them to purchase services such as check-in baggage, preferred seats, meals, or priority services like Fast Forward. These services can be added up to one hour prior to departure through IndiGo's website or at the airport. The fare includes one cabin bag up to 7 kg and provides auto-assigned seat at no additional cost, while excluding free checked-in baggage, complimentary meals, preferred seat selection, and upfront seat booking. As reported by NewsX, passengers can buy additional services like checked baggage, meals, preferred seats and Fast Forward (priority boarding) on IndiGo's website or at the airport, subject to availability. The service is ideal for business travellers travelling on short work trips, weekend travellers travelling with only hand luggage, students and budget-conscious flyers who don't need checked-in baggage. Passengers travelling under the Lite fare will continue to earn and redeem BluChip loyalty points, as confirmed by the airline.
According to IndiGo, this addition is part of the airline's strategy to break down its fare structure to suit different types of travellers. The airline already offers options like Saver, Flexi Plus, IndiGo UpFront, IndiGoStretch and Stretch+, with IndiGo Lite being the newest addition to this lineup and sitting at the entry level. With this addition, IndiGo's 6E Ways to Fly portfolio now offers a wider spectrum of choices along with Saver, Flexi Plus, IndiGo UpFront, IndiGoStretch and Stretch+, bringing greater customization and empowering customers to select combinations that best suit their travel preferences, comfort and budget. The introduction of IndiGo Lite expands the airline's fit-for-purpose fare portfolio, allowing price-sensitive travellers to choose a lower-cost option if they do not require checked baggage. This move could help IndiGo strengthen direct bookings, improve ancillary revenue opportunities and better compete across different customer segments. IndiGo Chief Strategy Officer Aloke Singh stated that the new fare is designed for customers who travel light and would like to pay only for the services they need, representing another step towards building a strong, fit-for-purpose product portfolio that reflects the airline's effort to respond to changing customer preferences while making air travel more affordable.
Following the announcement, shares of InterGlobe Aviation, IndiGo's parent company, were largely stable in the market, trading slightly lower at around ₹5,362. In a parallel development affecting the aviation sector, the Centre has reduced Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) prices by ₹5 per litre, bringing the effective rate down to approximately ₹110 per litre starting July 1. This reduction is expected to provide some relief to airlines that have been dealing with fluctuating fuel costs. As reported by IndiGo, this entry-level fare allows customers with only cabin-baggage to pay just for the utilized services offering greater flexibility and control over their travel spends. The fare is likely to be a hit with those who want to travel light and keep their ticket prices down, as passengers can tailor their trip by purchasing only the extras they want, such as checked baggage, meals or preferred seats, rather than paying for services in a bundle they may not want. The move comes after Air India last month introduced a new "Basic" fare for domestic flights, priced ₹300 to ₹700 lower for passengers willing to forgo the airline's complimentary onboard meal, with Air India's entry-level fare retaining a 15-kg checked baggage allowance, a 7-kg cabin baggage allowance, and complimentary tea or coffee.
