The Indian passenger vehicle segment demonstrated robust performance in April, with wholesale volumes rising by 25% year-on-year to 4.4 lakh units, according to ICRA's latest report. As reported by ICRA, this growth was driven by original equipment manufacturers continuing steady production to meet robust domestic demand. On a sequential basis, wholesale dispatches remained steady, while retail sales recorded strong YoY growth of 16% in April, supported by steady traction of newly launched models and the extended summer wedding season. The sustained positive impact of the revised Goods and Services Tax (GST) rates continued to support demand momentum throughout the month.
According to ICRA's assessment, the strong volume growth was attributed to GST rate cuts, the extended summer wedding season, and healthy demand for newly launched models. The report noted that retail volumes reduced on a sequential basis from March 2026, impacted by higher discounts to boost year-end volumes. Despite concerns over a weak monsoon outlook and the ongoing West Asia crisis, these positive factors continued to support demand momentum in the passenger vehicle segment, with the growth indicating increasing supply push from Indian OEMs.
ICRA reported significant improvement in inventory management, with inventory levels remaining low at 28-30 days in April 2026, compared to 50 days in April 2025 and 60 days as of September 2025, as per the Federation of Automobile Dealers Association (FADA). This improvement was aided by stronger retail offerings from Indian OEMs, indicating better supply chain management and demand-supply balance in the market.
According to ICRA's assessment, export volumes of passenger vehicles rose by a healthy 13% in April on a sequential basis, indicating increasing supply push from Indian OEMs. The report expects wholesale volume growth of 4-6% in FY27, with ICRA anticipating passenger vehicle industry volumes to expand by 4.6% in FY27, led by the likelihood of sustained demand momentum despite moderation in growth considering the elevated base of FY26 and weak monsoon outlook.
