India's automobile retail sales achieved a historic milestone with vehicle registrations rising 9.55% to a record 25.31 lakh units in May 2026, marking the best-ever May performance across passenger vehicles, three-wheelers, tractors and overall registrations. Despite this record annual growth, FADA reported a 6.75% month-on-month decline due to seasonal factors and a delayed monsoon, with the sequential softness reflecting customary post-April seasonal moderation and a delayed south-west monsoon. FADA President C S Vigneshwar explained that the sequential softness of 6.75% versus April reflects the customary post-April seasonal moderation and a delayed south-west monsoon, keeping May largely a pre-sowing month across much of rain-fed Bharat. The performance underscores the resilience of underlying demand, with dealers reporting higher enquiries for fuel-efficient and alternative powertrain vehicles.
May marked a watershed for alternative powertrains with overall EV penetration across all vehicle categories crossing 11% for the first time, representing a significant acceleration from around 7% during the entire financial year 2025-26. CNG's share in PV retails climbed to 23.34% from 19.93%, taking overall alternative fuel share in the segment past 38%. FADA President C S Vigneshwar attributed this shift directly to higher conventional fuel prices, stating that "Because of higher conventional fuel prices, EV share increased to around 11 per cent versus around 7 per cent for FY26." The electric vehicle segment demonstrated remarkable momentum with two-wheeler EV share climbing to 9.25% from 6.11% a year ago, reflecting a visible rise in enquiries for fuel-efficient and alternative-powertrain options. Dealers reported a rise in fuel prices accelerated consumer interest in alternative-fuel vehicles, with the shift toward cleaner mobility gaining momentum across all vehicle segments.
Electric passenger vehicle retail sales witnessed exceptional growth with sales jumping 81.2% to 26,682 units in May 2026 compared to 14,725 units in the same month last year, as reported by FADA. Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd continued to lead the pack with 10,340 units sold, up 103.42% from 5,083 units in May 2025, while Mahindra & Mahindra followed in second spot with 6,210 units, growing 114.8% from 2,891 units in the year-ago month. JSW MG Motor India secured third position at 4,984 units compared to 4,599 units in May 2025. Maruti Suzuki's recent entry is beginning to alter the competitive landscape, with the company already capturing nearly 6% market share in its first meaningful month, selling 1,591 units. This surge in electric passenger vehicle sales reflects the accelerating adoption of clean mobility solutions amid rising fuel prices.
The electric two-wheeler segment demonstrated robust performance with total sales growing 62.76% to 1,70,733 units in May 2026 compared to 1,04,896 units in May 2025, according to FADA data. TVS Motor Company led the segment with retail sales of 42,459 units, up 64.54% from 25,804 units in the same month last year. Bajaj Auto secured second position with 39,202 units compared to 22,642 units, while Ather Energy followed with 28,240 units against 14,101 units in May 2025. Ola Electric remained under pressure despite a sequential recovery, with retail sales declining 20% Y-o-Y to 15,141 units, even as the overall e2W market expanded 63% Y-o-Y, indicating continued market-share losses to established rivals such as TVS Motor, Bajaj Auto, and Hero MotoCorp. Electric three-wheeler retail sales stood at 71,867 units compared to 66,185 units in May 2025, while overall electric commercial vehicle sales reached 2,400 units versus 1,094 units in the previous year, showing broad-based adoption across all vehicle categories.
Tata Motors bucked the broader trend, growing share to 13.80% from 12.21% and closing the gap on Mahindra to under a percentage point in what is shaping up as a tight contest for the number two slot. Mahindra slipped to 12.75% market share from 14.22% a year ago, while Hyundai eased to 11.48% from 12.55%. Kia lifted share quietly to 6.12% from 5.65%, and Renault more than doubled its volumes year-on-year to 4,217 units, albeit off a low base. In the electric passenger vehicle segment, Tata Motors remained the market leader with a 38.8% share of ePV retail sales in May, followed by Mahindra & Mahindra with 23.3% share, while MG's share moderated to 18.7% despite positive growth. FADA President C S Vigneshwar urged passenger vehicle manufacturers to maintain disciplined dispatches during the seasonally softer June period to prevent excessive stock build-up at dealerships, noting that inventory increased to 31-33 days at the end of May from 28-30 days in April.
