Recent research reveals GLP-1 drugs may offer additional health benefits beyond weight loss, with growing evidence suggesting they could reduce cancer risk. According to Dr. Loren Rourke, a Texas-based breast surgical oncologist, the drugs promote weight loss and reduce chronic inflammation, which are both associated with better cancer outcomes. She emphasizes that "We know that a lower BMI equals a better prognosis with breast cancer," making the secondary weight loss effect from GLP-1 medications particularly beneficial. The National Cancer Institute reports that being obese or overweight is associated with an increased risk of at least 13 types of cancer, with Rourke estimating that excess body weight is likely the third-biggest risk factor for breast cancer, after female gender and aging. This new cancer prevention angle adds another dimension to the growing body of evidence supporting GLP-1 medications as multi-benefit treatments.
Weight-loss drugs such as Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro and Zepbound are fundamentally changing consumer purchasing patterns and food industry strategies. According to a June analysis by McKinsey, users' grocery spending fell 11.5% for chips and savoury snacks, 8.5% for sweet bakery products, 7% for cookies and 6.8% for soft drinks six months after starting GLP-1 medicines. Meanwhile, spending increased 2.5% for yoghurt, 1.5% for fresh produce, 1% for meat snacks and 0.5% for nutrition bars. PwC's June 2026 research found that 61% of GLP-1 users bought fewer sweet treats and 56% fewer salty snacks, while 44% bought more fresh produce, 35% more packaged protein and 34% more fresh protein. Latest research from Washington State University shows that GLP-1 drugs are reducing grocery store spending by $6.5 billion in the US alone, with at least 5% of adults now using these medications and forecasts predicting usage could reach 10 times higher by 2035.
Major food companies are actively developing products specifically for GLP-1 medicine users. Nestlé has launched its frozen food brand Vital Pursuit, focusing on protein, collagen, micronutrients and muscle preservation for consumers taking these medications. The company is using artificial intelligence to analyze clinical research and consumer behavior in product development. Conagra's frozen food brand Healthy Choice has introduced an 'On Track' badge for GLP-1-friendly products, while Daily Harvest and Smoothie King have launched protein- and fiber-focused offerings. In India, Delhi-based EatFit Lab lists GLP-1-friendly, high-protein and fiber-rich bowls and meals on its menu, though the market remains in early stages. General Mills announced in October 2025 that it was planning to make more of its products available in reduced pack sizes, partly to cater to people on weight-loss drugs. Many restaurants are taking similar approaches, offering wider ranges of smaller plates such as starters and tapas, as well as bite-sized desserts.
The trend reflects a fundamental shift toward protein, fiber, fresh foods and smaller portions as consumers adopt weight-loss strategies. A January 2026 study in Food Policy found that GLP-1 use increased consumers' willingness to pay for most protein products studied, while making demand for some products less price-sensitive. According to Aastha Sharma, chief dietician at Yatharth Hospital, adequate protein, fiber, micronutrients and hydration are key priorities for GLP-1 users, with protein particularly important for muscle mass preservation during weight loss. However, she notes that most nutritional requirements can be met through regular Indian foods like dal, beans, paneer, curd, eggs, fish, chicken, soy, vegetables, fruits, whole grains, nuts and seeds. Research from IFF shows that GLP-1 users often feel dehydrated due to consuming smaller portions and reducing water intake from food, while over 60% reported altered or unpleasant taste sensations. They tend to be more sensitive to bitter, salty and sweet tastes, with foods that are smooth, light and creamy going down well while those that are dry, sticky, dense or chewy becoming unappealing.
Food manufacturers are developing innovative solutions to meet the changing preferences of GLP-1 users while addressing new formulation challenges. Biospringer by Lesaffre produces yeast-based ingredients that can reduce fat content by up to 30% using flavours and textures that mimic original creaminess. Other yeast-extract based ingredients can reduce sugar by up to 30% while maintaining sweet appeal. IFF has developed a coffee drink that's low in sugar, high in vitamins and contains protein and fibre, available in three flavours. There's also a strawberry and apple protein bar designed to be small yet filling, containing fibre for gut health without being too sweet or dry. Another product is an electrolyte-protein-fiber mixture in small sachets for hydration and energy, available in three flavours. According to Thomas Bernsmeier, market development manager for Europe & APAC at Jungbunzlauer, sugar and calorie reduction remain key priorities in food and beverage reformulation, with drinks and supplements emerging as major innovation areas including rehydration products, fortified beverages, and gummies.
While GLP-1 drugs facilitate weight loss, they also present challenges for bone health maintenance. According to Sarah J. Wherry, PhD, Assistant Professor at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, losing about 8-10% of body weight through GLP-1s typically results in 2% bone mass loss, though she suspects more bone loss may occur due to rapid weight loss rates. However, Dina Peralta-Reich, MD, a physician with dual board certifications in pediatrics and obesity medicine, emphasizes that the medication itself doesn't cause bone loss—excessive or rapid weight loss does. To prevent bone loss, experts recommend weight-bearing exercises like strength training and moderate-intensity aerobic activity for at least 150 minutes per week. Lauren Manaker, RDN, CPT, suggests focusing on heavier weights that provide greater mechanical stimulus to build bone, with exercises like squats, lunges, deadlifts, and overhead presses. Additionally, maintaining adequate intake of calcium, vitamin D, and protein through nutrient-dense foods becomes crucial, as GLP-1-induced appetite suppression may otherwise lead to inadequate consumption of these bone-supporting nutrients.
