GK Energy shares surged 6% following the announcement of the battery storage project award, reaching an intraday high of ₹126.95 on the NSE before settling at ₹126.36 as of 2:22 pm. The stock rally reflects investor confidence in the company's expanding renewable energy portfolio and the significant revenue potential of the new battery storage project. According to Business Standard, the company rallied 5.97% to ₹126.95 after receiving the Letter of Award from Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL).
GK Energy has officially secured a Letter of Award from Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) for establishing 150 MW / 300 MWh Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) in Maharashtra. According to the company's exchange filing dated September 21, 2026, the project will be implemented with Viability Gap Funding (VGF) support and is scheduled for commissioning within 18 months from the signing of the Battery Energy Storage Purchase Agreement (BESPA). The signing of the formal BESPA is expected within the next few months, with timely achievement of milestones during the 18-month construction phase.
The contract includes attractive financial terms with a tariff of ₹2.38 lakh per MW per month, translating to a yearly revenue of ₹42.84 crore excluding GST for the project duration. The contract spans 15 years from the commencement of commercial operations, providing GK Energy with recurring monthly revenue for 15 years from the start of commercial operations. This represents a substantial addition to the company's revenue stream beyond the initial project execution period, with the 15-year recurring monthly revenue model providing a stable and highly predictable cash flow stream of ₹42.84 crore per year. The filing confirms the revenue structure is recurring and monthly in nature, offering revenue visibility once the project becomes operational.
This battery storage award adds another significant project to GK Energy's diversified renewable energy portfolio, complementing the company's recent 1 lakh rooftop solar projects valued at approximately ₹454.5 crore including GST. The Pune-based renewable energy company was allocated 1 lakh rooftop solar projects of 1 kilowatt each, taking the combined capacity of that programme to 100 MW. In July 2026, the company secured an additional ₹235.92 crore order from MSEDCL to install 10,000 solar-powered water pumping systems across Maharashtra. These milestones bring the company's total order allocations in FY27 to well over ₹1,092 crore as of late August 2026, showcasing an evolving and robust business model that reduces dependency on short-term EPC contracts.
The latest project award comes alongside strong financial performance for the financial year 2025-26, with revenue of ₹1,532.54 crore and Profit After Tax of ₹201.27 crore. The company reported a surplus cash balance of ₹240.61 crore as of March 31, 2026, providing a strong financial foundation for the new project execution. The 150 MW BESS project represents a crucial pivot for GK Energy as it transitions into grid-scale utility energy storage, building confidence in the company's technical execution capabilities beyond distributed water pumps. This win is expected to strengthen investor confidence in the company's multi-gigawatt clean energy platform ambitions, with the high-margin, predictable cash flows providing a high-quality cash buffer offsetting any volatility in the core decentralized distributed solar business.
