Dilip Buildcon Ltd (DBL) is planning to invest around ₹15,000 crore over the next two to three years across renewable energy, power transmission and oil and gas pipelines, marking a significant strategic shift for the Bhopal-based infrastructure company. As reported by Business Standard, this represents a major diversification from the company's traditional road construction business into long-term infrastructure assets. Madhya Pradesh will be at the centre of this expansion, with ₹6,572 crore expected to be invested in solar power projects in the state. The company plans to develop two projects that together will add nearly 2 GW of solar generation capacity, with solar investments expected to support daytime power availability for farmers and clean energy for the state's drinking water infrastructure.
Dilip Buildcon shares surged as much as 3.6% in intraday trade on Wednesday, October 7, before paring some gains to trade 1.52% higher as of 11:08 AM IST. The stock extended its gains to a second consecutive session after breaking a three-session losing streak on Tuesday, with the positive momentum driven by the company's major infrastructure project announcement. As per latest market data, the stock had opened at ₹399.30 and reached an intraday high of ₹415.20 before settling near the ₹407 level during the late-morning session. The company currently maintains a market capitalization of ₹6,617 crore, though shares have fallen more than 14% in the year-to-date period and are down 21% over the trailing 12-month period. The stock had previously risen to its 52-week high of ₹538.20 on the same day last year and is currently trading at a discount of 32.2% to that price.
The company received the Grant of Authorisation from the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) for a substantial LPG pipeline project valued at approximately ₹1,800 crore excluding GST. As reported in the company's exchange filing, the project involves laying, building, operating and expanding a Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) pipeline from Paradip, Odisha, to Raipur, Chhattisgarh. PNGRB granted the company an exclusive licence to act as the authorised entity for developing, financing, constructing and operating the LPG pipeline infrastructure, providing a significant regulatory backing for the project. The licence allows the entity to levy and collect tariffs for LPG transportation up to designated delivery points for an operation period of 25 years, following a three-year construction period. The project will be executed over 36 months and will be implemented through a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) in which Dilip Buildcon will hold 100% equity.
The company's overall energy portfolio is expected to generate approximately ₹68,000 crore in revenue over their lifetime, underlining the scale of the transition from traditional construction-led business towards long-term infrastructure assets. According to Business Standard, DBL 2.0 is focused on building a more diversified and sustainable business model, with a deliberate shift towards asset-backed and long-term businesses alongside EPC operations. Chairman and Managing Director Dilip Suryavanshi stated that "as we scale our investments across these businesses, we expect the asset-led and mining business portfolio to contribute around 75% of our profits by FY29." The diversification strategy places DBL in three of the country's expanding energy infrastructure segments: renewable energy, electricity transmission and oil and gas pipelines. The ₹1,800 crore project provides critical mid-term revenue visibility, acting as a buffer after a weak Q1 FY7 financial performance where consolidated net profit dropped over 50%.
The project will be executed over 36 months and will be implemented through a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) in which Dilip Buildcon will hold 100% equity. According to the company's exchange filing, Dilip Buildcon will undertake the design, finance, development, construction, operation and maintenance of the proposed LPG pipeline infrastructure, subject to applicable approvals, authorisations and regulatory requirements of the PNGRB. The company clarified that engineering, procurement and construction works are proposed to be awarded to Dilip Buildcon itself, maintaining complete control over the project execution. During the operating term, the project will generate revenue through the applicable petroleum and petroleum products pipeline transportation tariff for LPG transportation through the pipeline. The pipeline will operate as a Common Carrier under the applicable PNGRB framework, allowing third-party users to access its capacity. The company's role through the SPV will focus on infrastructure development and transportation services, keeping it isolated from commercial risks related to LPG procurement, trading, distribution or marketing.
