State-owned BEML Limited has unveiled the BH60-EV, described as India's first indigenously designed and developed 60-ton electric dump truck for mining and infrastructure sectors. According to the latest company announcement, the launch was virtually unveiled by Shri Shantanu Roy, CMD, BEML Limited, at the company's Mysuru Complex, marking a significant expansion of India's electric vehicle transition beyond passenger cars and buses into heavy industrial applications. The launch was conducted in the presence of Functional Directors, senior officers and employees, with Roy emphasizing that the BH60-EV marks a significant milestone in BEML's journey towards next-generation electric mobility for heavy industry.
The BH60-EV features a 1,000 kWh high-voltage lithium-ion battery pack powered by a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) integrated with a rugged gearbox. As reported by Livemint, the vehicle has a payload capacity of 54,500 kg with a rock body and volumetric body capacity of 36.4 cubic metres. The electric drivetrain provides instant torque and high tractive effort, enabling operation on gradients and challenging mining terrain. The vehicle is built to meet the demanding requirements of mining and infrastructure operations while delivering zero tailpipe emissions during operation, supporting the shift towards cleaner mobility in heavy industry.
BEML claims the BH60-EV is designed to deliver 40-60% lower operating costs compared with conventional diesel-powered equipment, though actual savings depend on operating conditions. According to the company announcement, the electric platform is engineered to improve energy efficiency while providing high power-to-weight ratio, acceleration and gradeability. The company estimates each vehicle could enable an annual reduction of around 130 tonnes of CO₂ emissions, subject to operating conditions, supporting both industrial productivity and the transition towards a cleaner future.
Beyond the vehicle itself, BEML offers a complete charging station solution designed to work with site electrical infrastructure and scale for fleet operations. As reported by Livemint, this integrated approach is particularly important for mining companies requiring infrastructure capable of handling large energy requirements. The BH60-EV features a spacious, ergonomically designed cabin incorporating a Roll-Over Protective Structure (ROPS), emergency steering and sealed oil-cooled disc brakes, supporting enhanced safety, reliability and operator comfort in demanding operating conditions. This integrated approach enables customers to adopt electric heavy-duty equipment with a charging ecosystem tailored to their operational requirements.
The BH60-EV represents an expansion of BEML's electric heavy-equipment portfolio, following the launch of its 35-ton Electric Dump Truck on April 10, 2026. According to the company announcement, with the BH60-EV, BEML continues to expand its portfolio of advanced electric and sustainable equipment, strengthening its capabilities in the design and manufacture of next-generation heavy-duty machinery for India and global markets. BEML Limited, a leading multi-technology 'Schedule A' company under the Ministry of Defence, operates in three verticals: Defence & Aerospace, Mining & Construction, and Rail & Metro, with state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities located in Bengaluru, Kolar Gold Fields (KGP), Mysore, and Palakkad.
