Bandhan Financial Services is positioning itself for potential entry into the health insurance sector, according to Chairman Chandra Sekhar Ghosh. As reported by PTI, the company will explore opportunities in health insurance once recent acquisitions of a mutual fund company and life insurance companies stabilise. The immediate focus remains on consolidating existing businesses before pursuing further expansion opportunities. Ghosh described the sector as a significant opportunity but emphasized that the group has a strategic plan to enter new businesses, though it is not yet the right time to indicate when the health insurance foray would occur.
The acquisitions include IDFC Mutual Fund in 2023, IDFC Asset Management Company in 2023, and Aegon Life Insurance in 2024, carried out by Bandhan Financial Holdings Ltd (BFHL), which is also the promoter of Bandhan Bank. According to PTI, BFSL, along with other investors, acquired IDFC Mutual Fund in 2023 and took over IDFC Asset Management Company subsequently in 2023, followed by Aegon Life Insurance in 2024. The group has acquired three companies in the past three-and-a-half years, apart from its social-sector operations, and is currently focused on streamlining and integrating these businesses. Ghosh noted that these acquisitions need to be streamlined, and that is the focus currently. It will take time before we move into something else.
A composite insurance licence would facilitate the group's exploration of insurance sector opportunities, as noted by Ghosh. As reported by PTI, a parliamentary panel in 2024 suggested introducing such a licence for insurers to undertake life, general, or health insurance under one entity to increase insurance penetration in the country. However, according to the Insurance Act 1938 and Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India regulations, composite licensing for insurers is not currently permitted.
Beyond insurance, Ghosh indicated the group is exploring opportunities in investment banking and wealth management segments where it currently has no presence. According to PTI, Ghosh stated that there are opportunities in investment banking, where we are not present. We are not in wealth management either. These represent areas where the group sees potential for expansion, though the chairman described the current timing as not appropriate for indicating when the health insurance foray would occur.
Bandhan Financial Services Limited (BFSL) is incorporated in 1995 and registered with the Reserve Bank of India as an NBFC MFI, engaged in microfinance activities since 2009.
