Leading e-commerce players including Amazon, Zomato (Eternal), Meesho, Swiggy, and Zepto have officially launched the Digital Commerce Coalition on Tuesday, marking the formal establishment of this industry-led platform focused on India's digital commerce sector. The coalition brings together leading digital-first e-commerce companies to address key industry challenges through collective action, as reported by ET. Flipkart does not appear on the list of coalition partners in this initial formation, with the coalition specifically focusing on areas where collective industry action can help improve customer experiences, expand opportunities for entrepreneurs and small businesses, strengthen supply chains, support delivery partners, and contribute to broader economic development.
The Digital Commerce Coalition aims to enhance customer experiences, support small businesses and delivery partners, and foster economic development through collective action. A joint statement issued on 1 June stated that the body aims to address issues including customer experience and trust, delivery partners, entrepreneurship, economic participation, small businesses, supply chain, sustainable growth and responsible innovation among others. The coalition will also serve as a forum for stakeholder engagement, thought leadership, and knowledge sharing to help ensure growth remains responsible and future-ready. Koan Advisory Group, a New Delhi-based public policy consulting firm, has been appointed as the secretariat for the coalition and will oversee its engagement, research, and convening activities.
According to ET reports, Eternal (Zomato) Head of Public Policy Dr Jaskiran Bedi stated that the Coalition creates a strong case for collaboration across industry, emphasizing that digital commerce is making everyday consumption more convenient while enabling new avenues of livelihood and entrepreneurship for millions. Meesho Head of Public Policy Prachi Bhuchar added that as e-commerce adoption deepens across Bharat, collaborative industry initiatives can help shape inclusive growth, particularly for small businesses and underserved markets. Zepto Chief Policy Officer Rachit Ranjan said that the move was important as no single company can solve for key priorities alone, highlighting the need for industry-wide collaboration to address issues related to MSME access, supply chains, and consumer trust. Ranjan noted that India's digital commerce sector is at an inflection point, with the choices the industry makes determining how MSMEs access markets, supply chains become more resilient, and consumer trust is protected.
The Digital Commerce Coalition launch comes as India's e-commerce market experiences unprecedented growth, with projections indicating significant expansion ahead. According to an ICICI Securities report, India's e-commerce market is expected to nearly triple to $174-214 billion by FY30 from around $70 billion in FY25. The report projects that e-commerce penetration in overall retail is projected to rise from 7 percent to 13 percent during the period. The brokerage noted that India's e-commerce market has grown at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of around 20 percent over FY20-25 and is expected to continue expanding at a 20-25 percent CAGR over the next five years. This growth trajectory underscores the urgent need for coordinated industry representation to address the sector's expanding scale and complexity.
