According to reports from ETInfra, the project award value stands at ₹5,301 crore, representing one of the largest infrastructure contracts in the region. The company received the Letter of Award (LoA) from VPPL on Tuesday, as confirmed in a regulatory filing. This award is a testament to Afcons's proven expertise in delivering complex and large-scale marine infrastructure projects, with the company emerging as the lowest bidder for the project with an estimated bid of ₹5,111 crore. The project involves construction of a 10.14 km-long breakwater at the upcoming Vadhvan Port in Maharashtra, marking a significant milestone in the port's development.
Upon completion, the breakwater will be recognized as the second longest breakwater in the world, as reported by ETInfra. This achievement underscores the scale and significance of the Vadhvan Port project, which is being developed as a major maritime infrastructure facility in Maharashtra. The breakwater's substantial length and global ranking position it as a landmark engineering project in India's port development sector, showcasing the country's growing expertise in executing complex infrastructure on a global scale. S Paramasivan, Managing Director, Afcons Infrastructure, expressed immense pride in securing one of the world's landmark marine projects, noting that the successful completion would further strengthen the vision of Viksit Bharat. "This project showcases India's growing expertise in executing complex infrastructure on a global scale," he said. Krishnamurthy Subramanian, Executive Chairman, Afcons Infrastructure Ltd, stated that the work order is a testament to the company's proven expertise in delivering complex and large-scale marine infrastructure projects, highlighting that the Vadhvan breakwater project will be a strategic enabler for India's maritime ambitions.
The Vadhvan Port project represents a significant addition to Maharashtra's maritime infrastructure portfolio. According to ETInfra, the breakwater construction forms a crucial component of the overall port development plan. The project's scale and the involvement of major infrastructure companies like Afcons Infrastructure indicate the strategic importance of the Vadhvan Port facility in the state's maritime connectivity and economic development plans. As noted by Afcons' leadership, the Vadhvan breakwater project will be a strategic enabler for India's ambition to become a global maritime hub. The port is planned as India's largest public port and one of the world's largest container ports, with an expected handling capacity of 23.2 million TEUs. This positioning will enable India to compete prominently on the global trade map and strengthen the country's maritime infrastructure capabilities.
The contract award reinforces Afcons Infrastructure's position as a leading marine infrastructure contractor. The company cited previous marine projects in India and overseas, including the Bulk Jetty at Port of Sohar in Oman, the New Owendo International Port in Gabon and the Sulphur Jetty project in Kuwait. Afcons Infrastructure, part of the Shapoorji Pallonji Group, operates in 31 countries across South Asia, Africa, the Middle East and the CIS region. The company also noted that Engineering News-Record had ranked Afcons as the world's eighth-largest marine and port facilities contractor. In India, Afcons has delivered several landmark marine projects, while internationally, the company has executed complex marine projects including the Bulk Jetty at Port of Sohar, Oman, one of the world's deepest ports; the New Owendo International Port in Gabon, completed in a record time of 18 months and recognised as the fastest completed port project in West Africa; and the Sulphur Jetty in Kuwait, a comprehensive EPC berth facility with trestles, equipment, and structural works. This global experience and recognition position the company well to execute the Vadhvan Port breakwater project, which represents one of the world's major marine infrastructure projects.
