Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani announced on Thursday that the conglomerate would invest more than ₹1 lakh crore in West Bengal by 2035. Speaking at the Annual Session of Indian Chamber of Commerce in Kolkata, Adani emphasized that "The next chapter must create new centres of gravity. However challenging it may be for India's next trillion dollars of growth, the east must rise and this is where Bengal becomes essential to fulfill the vision of Viksit Bharat." According to NDTV, Adani highlighted that India's economic momentum has been majorly driven by the western and southern parts of the country, but the next chapter of growth must create new centres of economic gravity with Bengal being critical to fulfill the vision of Viksit Bharat. The investment commitment spans multiple sectors and represents a substantial long-term commitment to West Bengal's infrastructure development, with Adani describing the state as "no location in India has Bengal's extraordinary combination of geography, talent and economic potential."
As reported by NDTV, the group will spend ₹4,000 crore on the multi-speciality 'Adani Arogya Mandir' in the New Town area near Kolkata. The hospital project will be developed as a not-for-profit medical institution with 2,000 beds, a medical college and research facilities. The project, spread across 51.75 acres at the Bengal Silicon Valley Tech Hub in New Town, Kolkata, is expected to cater to more than 200,000 inpatients and over 2 million outpatients annually, while generating around 10,000 jobs across West Bengal's healthcare ecosystem. Of the 2,000 beds, about 1,000 will be reserved for economically weaker sections and covered under state and central health insurance schemes. The healthcare initiative will include a medical college, advanced research facilities and specialised care infrastructure. The investment will cover the hospital, medical college and research facilities, with the project expected to generate more than 10,000 jobs across West Bengal's healthcare ecosystem and build a skilled healthcare workforce in the state.
According to NDTV, over the coming year our intent is to deploy ₹1 lakh crore in Bengal. "This will span ports, logistics, power generation, transmission and distribution, roads, bridges, ropeways, green cement as well as hyperscale data centres," Adani stated. The power distribution initiative will cover the twin cities, while the rest of West Bengal remains under state-owned WBSEDCL. Adani explained the rationale for the infrastructure push, stating that ports strengthen logistics, logistics attracts industry, industry drives manufacturing, manufacturing needs energy, and energy enables digital infrastructure, adding that "jobs multiply" as the chain builds up. Calling West Bengal the country's natural maritime and logistics bridge to Northeast India and Southeast Asia, Adani said the state has the potential to become "one of Asia's greatest integrated industrial and economic platforms."
As reported by NDTV, Adani highlighted "no location in India has Bengal's combination of advantage — to the west lies the mineral and industrial heartland of Odisha, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh, to its north and east, lies India's gateway to north east, through the Bay of Bengal lies some of the fastest growing markets like south east asia and indo pacific with access to 60% of global gdp and 65% of global population." The group also unveiled a ₹4,000 crore investment to establish the Adani Arogya Mandir in New Town, conceived as a strictly not-for-profit institution that will integrate a super-speciality hospital, an advanced medical college, and a dedicated clinical research institute. At the foundation stone-laying ceremony, Adani emphasized that the entire nation is looking toward Bengal to renew its historic industrial and intellectual strength, highlighting the group's comprehensive approach to state development.
As reported by Business Standard, the announcement was made during a ceremony where Adani laid the foundation for the healthcare project alongside Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, demonstrating the collaborative approach to developing West Bengal's infrastructure and industrial capabilities. Alongside its infrastructure and healthcare plans, the group will support initiatives to preserve West Bengal's cultural heritage, including the restoration of the historic Writers' Building, the revitalisation of Kumartuli Ghat, and initiatives to showcase Kolkata's Durga Puja art to a global audience. The Group signed two MoUs with the Government of West Bengal – one for the restoration of the historic Writers' Building, once the state secretariat, and the other for promoting Kolkata's Durga Puja on the global stage through Adani Pujo Preview. Adani described the group's port in Mundra, Gujarat as its first 'karmabhoomi' in the west, hoping Bengal would become its second in the east. "While healthcare can transform individual lives, infrastructure can transform the opportunities available to millions and this is where our larger commitment to Bengal begins," Adani emphasized, highlighting the group's comprehensive approach to state development.
